The October antlerless deer season occurs at the nicest time of year. Nowdays, "Any Muzzleloader" is legal to hunt with. Our after-Christmas Traditional muzzleloader season requires the use of Flintlocks, only.

I have been trying to decide which ML to use for the week-long season. I have a pair of Hawken flinters, .50 and .54 caliber, that are at the top of my list. Next are the .50 Hawken caplock and a .54 caplock Renegade. I use patched roundball in all these arms.

Between now and October 13, I will get to the backyard bench a few times and finalize the choice of my opening day gun.

That's the time I'll be toting the flinter around. I stay away from the early season.

Good luck!

Swift,

Thanks for the good wishes. Actually, I do not like to shoot does and have never shot one that was not already greviously injured. I like to walk the woods and have let many does walk on. I am scouting and addressing my concerns with slob hunters and tresspassers on the farm.

My October season with my MLs is really "Woods Loafing" and I have taken many a nap in the woods on a fair Indian Summer day way over back in the big woods.

I like the after-Christmas Traditional Season because I can dress up like an old Longhunter who tred hereabouts in 1755. I will hunt out of my half-faced camp over in the West Woods in late December.

This morning I had a big doe cross the tractor road 25 yards in front of me, and she is still calling this old farm her home.

I was walking my dog, Lori, up to the big hayfield and all I had was a .357 revolver on my hip in case we met another raccoon. I have never shot a doe that was uninjured and will not kill one as our deer herd is far too small, in my opinion.

Last Saturday was opening day for ML deer and early small game of grouse and squirrel. I could not get out of the house without Lori, so I took the 20 gauge and Lori for a walk about. We saw no deer, but I did shoot a grouse that Lori flushed. October is half over and I regret seeing my favorite month pass by so quickly.
