Ok, so I got this garmin etrex a couple years ago for Christmas. Never did much with it 'cause there ain't much to do with unless you buy a map cd for it. So I started looking around. Cheapest I found was $100+. I don't think so, not for something I'm not sure I'm gonna use or like. Anyone have any cheaper suggestions?

You don't really need electronic maps to use a GPS. Its a nice convenience, but when I started out with my Gamin GPS 12, which I still have and use, I just learned to translate to a paper map. Pretty much the same as with a paper amp and compass.
In fact, I'd make sure I can use a paper map and compass even if I had a an electronic set-up! Why? U never know when the elctronics are gong to crash. I have a GPS program for my iPAQ that I use mostly for auto travel. Has teh moving map etc. Well, I put my iPAQ in my computer bag to leave work the other night, pluuled it out the nxt morning and the screen had burned out! Wow! Lucky I did not need it that day! Ordered a new one, but...
I have the Backroads Explorer program for my pc and there is a down-load to allow me to copy small sections of a topo map onto the iPAQ. Maybe something like that would work with your Garmin?

I have the etrex, with the Canada road map (around $150 here) and I love it. It shows all the side roads, grid roads, and oil lease roads, heck it even has some of the cart trails!
Comes in handy for geocaching, and hunting.
