I was in a gun shop last week and thought I saw a Remingtom 788 on the used gun rack. Turns out it was a Remington Sportsman 78 in .270 Win. and I got it for $210.00 out the door. The gun appears to be unfired and it now wears a 3X-9X scope. Hope to get it sighted in for opening day of deer season next week. All the best...

Gil,

That sounds like a real deal! Is that a Sears gun made by some other gun company like the "J. C. Higgins" shotguns were made by High Standard?

The Sportsman 78 is a no frills Model 700 in a hardwood stock. It is marked as a Remington. The bolt face has no signs of use. All the best...

I had one for years i had to have a new triger installed but that was it.
I loaned it to a freind to go to africa when he come back he loved the gun so much he gave me the money to buy a 700bdl.
He took it a weatherbe 340 and a 375hh mine was a 270 as well.

I bought a 78 when the came out. I think their extractor is different than the 700. I have not had any problems with mine though.

I think the 78 is worth many more times than the 788. But then the used 788's are bringing a lot of money - - much more than I would pay for them. (OK if you like the 788 that is your choice - I don't.)

I ve had a 270 in the 78 for 20 yrs now with zero problems just had trigger work done and is very accurate and has seen thousands of rounds. Would trade wife before that gun.
