I went to the gun show last weekend and decided to buy a Jim Zumbo special.... An AR-15. I o.d. on information so I thought I would ask the experts here on hunt chat. Why would I spend $500 to $600 more for a Colt or Smith when I can buy a DPMS cheaper? Keep in mind I have no intentions of keep it in it's stock appearance with all the options and accessories available. Thanks for the help.

I am interested in this thread too. However, I don't think DPMS's are really that cheap. It depends what you get on them. I tried to build one on their website the other day, and with everything I want it almost costs as much as a J&P. So, I'm just going to bite the bullet, no pun intended, and buy a J&P. That way, I don't have to modify anything and the gun is exactly the way I want it.

I'm even going to get the J&P AR-10 that they now have. 2008 should be a pretty good year.

Right now i still have 3 and the verdict for me is 1 Colt Sporter and 2 Bushmasters. Fabs part of the fun in having an AR is the fact that the average guy can do all kinds of stuff to them. Had a couple of DPMS guns and as far as i was concerned...they were just OK...but they did work!:D

Bought the Bushmaster this weekend along with a Yugo SKS. Can't wait to get to the range.

I bought a pair of unfired police turn-in pre-ban Colts off the used gun rack and love them. At our monthly NMC rifle matches, the Bushmasters are hard to beat. Take care...

So's the price. At least it was a few years back when I bought mine. I wouldn't trade mine for anything but a Vette:D

I know very little about all the brands. I was told its A-B-C, Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, in that order ??? I got the cheapest Bushmaster < $800 + a $50 scope just to play with. I have to admit I like my Bushmaster

Watch this movie and this was the 2nd time out with the AR

Thanks for the help. Now what about optics? I'm kicking around the eotech holographic sight but I know my range will be limited by my sight. I've also seen some standard scopes that look good and do the job. Give me some advise.

What is it's primary use? If it's an M4-type weapon used for self-defense then the holo sight should work well. If you're going to hunt with it you'll need something with a little more magnification. I had a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x44 X Mildot on mine from the time I bought it until about 2 months ago when I decided I wanted to buy a new upper and turn it into an M4-type. I now have an Aimpoint Comp M2 sitting up top and I'm saving money for a 16" upper and a few other "bells and whistles".
