Interestin metal detector finds...

The kids and me decided to pick a perty day (in the 60's) and see what gold treasure :rolleyes: we could find last week. I've been REAL sick lately and could only stand it for a little while...but we found some neat stuff in the hour or so we were out. My son did most of the diggin and he done a fine job.
Neatest thing...the 2 shotgun tops in the pic are OLD. One is a Winchester NuBlack with a red patina. The other, a rem-umc shureshot. All of the others look to be rifle rounds...maybe 30 cal...the shorter ones maybe a 44 or 45...but the tallest has the same dia. as a 50 cal. but measures exactly 1 1/16" long. Found some old cut nails...and those 2 hunks of...stuff...dunno what they are, but they are iron.
While I caint identify what all of em are exactly, I can tell you that whoever hunted the woods at my house missed alot....lol
Anyway, if ya'll can enlighten me on some of these..esp. that long one...I would love to hear what ya come up with.

My guess on that long one is it's a wedge driven into a hatchet to keep the head on ;) Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Can't tell alot from the pick Lilred but that U shaped piece looks like a piece of replacement link used to reconnect a broke chain. They probably broke the link too. I know I have done it. Still interesting finds.

Obviously someone's been doing some shooting in that area. You have some full jacketed pistol bullets, and what looks like jacketed rifle bullets, or the jackets.
The bullet on the far left looks like a muzzle loader bullet, but a modern one. Could be from a large bore cartridge rifle, too- 45-70 or something of that nature.

Red, you think some of these came from the civil war days?..had to be some battle there or something interesting for that many slugs layin around......Is like finding arrow heads here in the fields...think it had to take time to make them but why are there so many layin around.......don' t they ever find their arrow and use it again? I think they had a hole in their bag as they traveled.

I wish mt digital was worth a har on a rats butt i'd like to show ya'll the riflin imprints on some of these. Some show the tell-tale wide muzzle-loader-type riflins...some are so thin and so many, I caint even think of why they would mark up like they did.

Skeeter, none of these are Civil war era, but a couple could be early-1900's or before. I know the Nublacks were from around that time frame. Cool thing, some of em are pure (or close to it) lead...hehehe...more for me!

Red, the ones with an unusual number of groove marks are likely fired from a Marlin rifle with their Micro Groove rifling.

The rock looking things on the right ? If you can stick a magnet to them they are (30% chance) meteorite chunks. Sure wish I could see them better . Anyway if they are meteorite they are worth more than everything else you have in the picture $100 to $300 an ounce. So they say. :eek:

Hey Spike, they are magnetic and they have little silver-lookin flakes in em. Dunno what kind of metal has those flakes in em..maybe grey cast iron?

Anyhow, we went back out and found a few more items. They said the place I'm on now was a huge farm many many years ago, and I can certainly believe it.

Coolest thing, that plow point. It was over a foot down and under a root. (It's all old hardwoods these days.) They must've broke the bolt and lost it and it kept gittn turned deeper and deeper in the soil. I have nary a clue as to it's age but judgin by the writin, I would say early 1900's or before. There's a name or somethin at the bottom that I just caint make out yet..but it looks to be HC then an A and a few more..one looks lke a P.

This one I think is a homemade horse bit. That was WAY down in the earth..right at 1 1/2 ft. It won't uncommon fer folks durin and right after the Civil War to forge their own materials. Esp. since Tredegar Iron Works was takin every metal the state could muster fer makin cannon and the like. Also, a few more bullets.
