Last nite was my first lesson of Jiu Jiitsu. I figured I could handle myself with whatever I saw coming, it was what I didnt see coming I needed to improve. My Sensei is ex marine and has been in the arts for over thirty years. I liked him. I signed up for private classes to begin, because I havent lifted anything heavier than the remote for years. He says I am strong and limber, I said, that depended who I was with???  :) anyway have any of you indulged in this?????Joining a gym had no interest to me....and he is heavy on weapons which appeals to me. What do you think, any of you indulge in this????

Oh and by the way, I figure in about 18 months the crime rate will sky rocket all over the country....we will all be targets...I want to be stronger than I have ever been when this happens...

you will like this, my teacher said, our goal is to get you spiritually strong and self confident.....I said no problem with that, got those, just need the body to go with them, he smiled...;)

My good elk hunting buddy is a 7th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is this year's National Blackbelt Chairman. He lives on a farm a couple miles away and is the nicest guy you've ever met.

We each shoot a .300 mag and in the field we're equals. When we get back to civilization he outranks me many times over.

The only advantage I have is I can outrun him.

Good luck to you Val.

Go for it! Tae Kwon Do is a different discipline, but it has done wonders for a couple of my grandsons. They are more fit, better emontionally balanced, and much more confident. Neither has anything to fear from a school bully anymore, and for a kid especially, that is a liberating thing.

Their Master is really the coolest guy ever. I'm still in shock from a couple of things I have seen him do, and he's 58.

used to be into the martial arts when I was younger...
a word to the wise-spend more time in the bottom position while you are learning,if you get in a scrape thats likely where you will end up unless you are the aggressor. There are a variety of submissions available from your back, learn to be comfortable there and you'll be ahead of the game.

good for you val. One secret is you never let anyone know just how much you do know....When my oldest daughter and her then boyfriend were into the arts..(pretty good I might add)..when they would come to my house after the guy would still be pumped up and once explained how he tossed a guy around like he was a rag doll...then he said...he was about my size...so I then just went to his face and said....Mike, I know kachink-kapow...and am a master in that....puzzled he asked what it was...so I just pointed and said...kachink-kapow...your dead..he never ever questioned me after.

Oh and val..I would say for good practice...you can stand face to face with someone in a doorway and kick over their head and squash a fly on the overhead door jam....you are pretty quick.....at least faster and stronger than a fly....lmao but yes it can be done.....another good exercise is ..remember those floor to ceiling pole lights?...Good exercise is when you enter a room, turn on the 3 lights with your feet as you kick out at them...lmao...that can be done too...try it oh...and leave them still there....have fun at your new adventure because it is great exercise...mind and body..who can't use that.

It is pretty amazing what people can make their bodies learn to do. By g'kids can kick anyone their own size in the face with considerable force, and they are quick.

um...you folks might wanna google"Jiu Jitsu"
doesn't have alot of striking involved,it's an evolved grappling style...

here,did it for ya's;

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit. The art was based on early 20th century Kodokan Judo,[2][1] which was itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese Jujutsu.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.[3] Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

like I said before Val,get comfy on the bottom.
your attacker can go from on top to waking up in a jail cell(or where ever you like) courtesy of a triangle choke...

Yea this is turning into a nice retreat for myself. I asked him about the possibility of a bad guy coming up from behind with a choke hold. We have been working on that the last two lessons. Its something I can visualize happening to a woman. The next will be a gun or knife put against me from behind. This is something I should have done long ago. He promises me by next month that he can blindfold me and I will be able to respond with the defense tactics he has taught me...its cool and my body feels healthier and stronger already...

Obviously this man thinks I am in better shape than I am...I am feelin the burn....and I have two scenario's of getting out of a chokehold....he says we have to burn them in my brain...Hey wouldnt this be cool, hire the guy to get you coming out of a public place...heck even private.....and make a surprise attack on you.....Oh what am I saying????:Might not be as good idea as I thought???;) But hey if I hire him, I should be able to tell him I might be carrying toooooooo....right??????:D
