Replacement scope also faulty!

Hi All,

This mornign I recieved a replacement Nikko Sterling 3-9x40AC Platinum scope from the seller, J.S. Ramsbottom, still heard nothing from the Importers Highland Outdoors :rolleyes: so I unpacked and checked it over carefully and adrn it if it has not got teh same fault. I laid the scope on the table with the eye bell overhanging and hedl the scope body solid against the table top so I could see out into the garden and whilst looking through the scope tried to wobble the eye bell on the body tube. Yes it moved as did the reticle as I watched it.

Phoned Ramsbottom's who said they will work out a deal with me for a replacement scope or a refund. I said I don't want another Nikko Sterling as thats' three new faulty ones I have had in a row now! :mad:. from their stock I really have the choice now of these:-

Simmons Whitetail Classic 3.5-10x40 Night View

Simmons Whitetail Clasic 3.5-10x50 Super Night View

or a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 with gloss body tube.

Any opinions?

Take the Bushnell Trophy. Better scope than the others Even though I have had no troubles with the few Simmons scopes I have they are all on light recoiling rifles. I did have a Simmons light powered variable on a shot gun and it lasted ok too. It went with the gun it was mounted on, though. Luck to ya from now on

they are made buy the same company and have both i have ha no problim with either.
i have a bushnell on my 870 slug gun it has been on it for a while.

Over the years I have owned about every brand of scope on the market and Leupold is the only brand I have not had problems with. It is the only brand I buy, but I do get other brands in trades some times. If I keep the gun, I put a Leupold on it. Life is to short to spend time worring about cheap scopes.

Catfish, I have two older Leupolds, a M8 Compact 4x and a 2.5-8 Vari X 111 which I am quite happy with however I got the chance to use a new Leupold the other month and it was awful :confused: not clear and soon gave eye strain. I try to look out for good used quality scopes but wanted a higher mag scope to use on the range for load development. My serious hunting rifles wear these:-

6x24 Schmidt & Bender
3-7x36 Pecar Berlin (got two of these)
4x36 Pecar Berlin
3-9x42 Lisenfeld
4x Khales 4L2 scope
3-9x42 Tasco Titan (came on the rifle and it's quite good actually)
2.5-8 Vari X 111
7x50A Meopta
4x Zeiss Jena ZF4/N

I have some cheaper scopes on rifles as well like a
6x42 Deutsch
6x40 Apollo 5*
4x40 Nikko Sterling Platinum
4x32 ASI
4x32 Special Sporting Nikko Sterling ( from the 1960's and earlier)

I also have a weaver K3W and a Weaver K1.5 both have steel tubes and a Bushnell Scope Chief 3x. The weavers I brought new as was the S&B 6x42, adn Deutsch 6x42 and 4x32 ASI this one back in 1979 for my Feinwerkbau Model 127 air rifle.

My income now is very low and fixed so I have to get what I can when I can and Leupold prices here are just plain silly. For about the same I can get a Schmidt & Bender or possibly a Pecar.

Brit those old steel tube weavers call a good some in my area they are well liked.
I have a k4 and a k2 i like the k4 i put it on my 270 for a while when i was scope poor and killed 2 deer in ky with it.

Well there is a V10 Weaver on the auction site and I am waiting to see how much it goes for. Might even bid on it. Isent the scope back and wrote a letter asking them to swop it for the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 they stock. Now we just wait.

Find it hard to believe that you found a Leupold that was not clear. I reall don`t know how many I have, around 30, and they are all excellant. Are you sure that some one did not turn the focus knob and get it out of wack? I know that the Leupold are higher over there, but the warranty on the Leupolds is better than on the Schmidt & Bender or Pecar, which cost more over here. The basic rule of thumb with any glass is" You get what you pay for.", and rifle scopes fit right in there. I`m lucky, and go to alot of gun shows and from time to time find so real bargins on scopes.

Well we tried to focus that Leupold but nothing seemed to improve it. John still has it I believe I will ask him when i next speak to him and find out what model it is. Of course it's possible that neither of us know how to focus a scope :D

Leupold will fix fee of charge. I fell once on ice broke the scope. No charge. Next time I rolled down a hill. Bent the thing pretty bad. Sold me a new 3x9 for $50 . Had a 6.5x20 that did not hold true at different powers. No problem, gave me a new one free of charge.

Hmmmm it's been a while but I finally brought used Simmons Competition 6-18x40 Air Gun scope which is on the rifle. it's OK for range use but not much use for hunting due to the focus being critical on distance.

Funny you should mention Leupold's warrenty but a friend in Missouri had problems with a new Leupo;d scope and it took a shouting match virtually to get them to even look at his scope before they found it was broken inside. OK they fixed it but the hassle of even getting them to look at it carefully is not worth it. He sold the repaired scope and now buys other makes.

I know of one person who used the Swaroski warrenty and the small matter was dealt with quickly turned out to be the rifle at fault :rolleyes: to it was replaced and the new rifle shoots well with that Swaroski scope on it.

I still have not asked John about that Leupold but should be able to catch up with him soon now holiday season is over. He is putting the Mobile homes to bed for the winter now as he runs a Mobile home holiday park. Possibly even get a little shootign together in and maybe possibly a hunt.

I say take the refund and buy a Sightron or a Luepold. But maybe thats just me. There are some really good quality (not great but good) Sightron S1s available at www.midwayusa.com in the $130s range.
