As luck would have it, I was asked to appraise a few arms for a widow who "wanted to get the guns out of the house." My appraisal was well received and she asked me for a check.
Since June 1 was payday from a grateful Gummint, I had the cash on deposit and now have a Winchester Model 70 in caliber "30-06 Govt." The serial number is 23xxx and it has a mint bore and very good exterior.
If the rain stops tomorrow, I will test fire the rifle.

Your rifle was made in 1939. Glad you have moved up in the world of classic rifles. All the best...

Now, dang it....work the bolt and see why some of us go bananas over these..............Congrats on the classic!!!
If you gonna shoot it, I think I still have a Redfield base for a pre war......that left safety takes some getting used to.LOL Oldest
one I have is #295xx.

Dan,
My rifle has a Stith scope and mounts and that is really classic. It looks old.

Dan,
The adjustments are in the mount, one for elevation and the other windage. If the rain stops, I will shoot it in the backyard. Stay tuned.

I also have an early 06 ...with a Stith mount and a Kollmorgan Bear Cub(pre Redfield) scope. Crosshairs are a little fine but that thing shoots pretty good. Love those ol M-70s. I only have 6 left at the present time. But looking at a post war 300H&H Supergrade.  Do it ever stop??

skeet,
You described my scope to the letter!
I shot the M70 yesterday and she functioned perfectly and gave me a 1.5" group at 100 yards with LC 69 Ball.

Just think of this..That ol Kollmorgan and Stith Mount represented the apex of the hunting optics being made in the US at one time. What would those ol shooters have thought of these new fangled scopes etc we have now? Wow!! Adam I am really lucky to be able to see the fine crosshairs in that ol Kollmorgan. Mine will shoot a bit better with 165 gr handloads I have made. Not the fastest loads but it'll do just under an inch ..with any factory loads it'll shoot about like yours.1.5 -2 inches. Heck I'll only shoot it about 200 yds anyway:D Mine(probably like yours) also has a checkered steel butt plate. With heavy loads and a tee shirt it will actually hurt!!

You think that M70 butt plate leaves a mark, you obviously ain't shot a 30 Express!!!!!LOL

The pre-64 is a good rifle. Many of the new rifles are better though.

Blasphemy!!
Some may be about as good...but better?? Not significantly enough to make a big diff. I just bought another today. Made in 56 bought in June 57. Has the papers hang tag and receipt...owners manual for the later Kollmorgan 1" 4x scope..and receipt for it also. Unfortunately it is also an 06...but this gun is 99 1/2 % and looks new. Bought it and a Parker Trojan in 90% condition for 1200 bucks. Hope this makes it on to HC. Comp is still messed up. Parker has to go though I do have to keep the 70:D Gonna sell the one I got about a month ago I guess

Got your PM ok.....replied. Just in case you don't get it, I'll put it here also. Appreciate the reply, another 06 will make me 3 of them.....don't really need another one. Price is in line with what they bring here...if you can find one! Just kinda looking for some other cals....Roberts/7 MM (in my dreams)/300 HH.

Among all of you true believers (Pre-64 Model 70) there may be a barrel I desire. Looking for a featherweight .308 Winchester
barrel for a Pre-64. I have a very good featherweight .30-06 barrel to trade if they would like to do that, rather than sell a .308 barrel. larryjk@tribcsp.com if you have something.
