I was doing a gun show down in Gillette Wy this weekend. Saw a sign for a yard sale.. Just hadda go. Guy and gal had 4 guns there. Couple I wasn't interested in but He had a Remington 870 Standard weight 20 ga skeet gun on the table for 250 bucks. Asked if he would take 175 ...but no go...but he said 180 ...so I had to do it. Not in bad condition either. The other I was interested in was a Swede mauser..long bbl in pretty good shape..but it got sold while I was making a deal on the Remmy. Asking on it was 150 bucks. Oh and got a Lyman Orange crusher press used but in the box. Even had the instructions and papers with it for a pretty fair price. Oh well I'm a sucker for reloaders

While at the gun show I bought a neat Ruger 77 in 257 Ackley improved.. got 100 empty fire formed cases..80 rounds of loaded ammo(with data for 'em but I'll still check 'em) dies and two boxes of Nosler Ballistic tips. Oh and the rifle has a 2x7 Burris on it. Price was ok too...300 bucks but I traded the guy a S&W 22A and 100 dollars. Glad to get rid of the 22A. 4 other dealers tried talking me out of it but I gotta try it out 'fore I sell it. Heck I think the dies are 60 bucks or so.

And for the old guys here on the board..I have a custom built rifle in 270 Win... the action is a wild one and one not many see.. It is built on a Newton action. The scope mount that is on it is an oldie too. Now I have to remember how to remove the bolt...oh Double set triggers on it.

skeet,

I always check out yard sales-you never know what you will find. I have found lots of components like bullets, wads and shot for great prices. I pass on cans of powder unless the cans are still sealed.

My last yard sale arm was a mint 20 gauge single barrel Iver Johnson Bicycle Works shotgun for $30.00.

On the 20 ga. Those are nice guns. Is it an older one? Some had 2 1/2 inch chambers. I bought one of those Old IJ shotguns in 12 ga and it was 2 1/2 inch. I also buy all kinds of reloading stuff at yard sales. I even buy the powder that is open if it is one I can identify for certain(red dot green dot 700X and a few others). At the gun show this weekend I bought an old can of 3031 Dupont. It was full but the can dates from the late 40's early 50's. Remember the old white cardboard Dupont cans with the very small top? I even bought a can of Dupont bulk smokeless one time. That darn powder is still good. Gotta be 70 yrs old:p I do wish I had gotten the Swedish Mauser though..it was in nice shape. Shoulda made him an offer on both...but I was excited about finding a 20 ga standard weigh skeet gun.

skeet,

Yes, my single 20 gauge IJ is very old, but has a 2.75" chamber. I started small game hunting in 1958 with a similiar Winchester Model 37 single barrel in 16 gauge. My twin, Gil, picked up a M37 and it will come to me in his will. Until then, I will walk the October woods with my Iver Johnson 20 gauge along with loyal hound, Lori.

GOB,

I remember looking through the old Sears catalogs in the mid-1950s and saw most single barrels went for $29.95. The guns were the M94 Stevens, the Winchester M37 and the Iver Johnson guns. It was good to cash in on yester-year prices.

skeet,

Actually, in 1957 we had an outhouse at the family cabin in Mifflin County, PA near Lewistown. I wonder if that old Sears catalog is still in that outhouse. I have not seen that cabin since 1976 because my dad sold the place.

If I remember correctly (as to the year) in 1960. long bout Hallowe'en 4 of us waited for ol Howard Larrimore...who was reglar as clockwork... to go out to the outhouse. He even had his lantern with him as he had a little readin to do. Comic books I think. When he went into the ol aforementioned outhouse...we locked the door.. pushed her back and carried him and said outhouse up the street and depositied it under the only stop light in 10 miles...course we then took off cause we din't wanna git caught ahangin round there. He was somewhat annoyed cause we didn't give him 'nuff time to do his bizness..Some local motorist(Ole Tit Walbert) turned him loose after a few minutes. Somewhere I have a pitcher(my mother took it) of the ol Outhouse sittin under that red light. Little dark cause the street lights weren't as bright as they is nowdays. BTW..this is a true story and one a his sons was one of the perptra..prap...culprits. He never found out who done it either. Bout 10 minits after they got the ol outhouse of'n the street ol Louder Larrimore(a relative of Howard ---known as the outhouse-ee) came along down the street. Glad they got the buildin outta the street cause ol Louder was always drunk and he woulda plowed right on into that little shack. Probably wouldn't have done no damage cause ol Louder he didn't drive no more than bout 10 MPH er so...in his 31 Ford. Po-leese never messed with him cause of it I guess...er maybe he just drove without no license anyway. Ol Louder he died in his little trailer from carbon monoxide one nite. sad story there too. I'll tell ya bout ol Louder a bit more some day
