Wood pellets are in short supply.

We got a bit behind this past Summer and passed on some end of season pellet sales at $180/ton.

Went looking for pellets about two weeks ago and found a shortage occuring in the industry. Sales of wood/coal/pellet stoves are supposed to have about quadrupled this Spring due to the threat of high heating oil prices. Stove and pellet manufacturers couldn't keep up.

Most stove dealers who sell wood pellets are selling only to previous customers and are rationing 1/ton per month right now.

A local Ace hardware store still had a good supply (maybe because folks don't realize they sell that kind of thing).
We picked up 4 ton last Sat morning with our trailer.
Am getting one more ton as a buffer.

The 4 ton discount at Ace for Lignetics pellets is $217/ton and Hamer is $237/ton.
(burned Hamer all last Winter and it worked well)

I've read that wood pellets are over $300/ton in some areas of the country.

Awhile back I started the below thread about a Harman pellet burner we were looking to get.
http://www.huntchat.com/showthread.php?threadid=44968&highlight=wood+pellets

We burned 4.25 ton of pellets last year and only ran the oil burner to keep things "lubed up".
Our area experienced a bad ice storm last Winter and lost power for 3 days.
The generator earned its keep and was running off and on the entire time. We'd shut it off around 11pm and start it back up in the morning.

Am considering putting a wood burner in the house and moving the pellet stove into our studio to cut oil bills there.

Just wish I had known about indoor wood pellet furnaces before we had the oil burner furnace installed.

Is this an actual wood burning furnace that you are talking about that will heat the entire house. If so, I would probably go for that myself. I have a couple of places that I can get free wood at.

The only reason I hesitate to get a pellet stove is because I would have to pay for pellets. Yes, they are less mess, but I am a cheap skate. That is why I am trying to build a house with wood stoves in the basement and the main floor. Of course, if there is such a thing as a wood burning furnace, then that is the way I would probably go.

Hi Fabs, I meant this: http://www.harmanstoves.com/callouts.asp?id=24

For what you want go to this page and look at the SF-series furnace: http://www.harmanstoves.com/list.asp?id=48,6,24,27,28,29,30,31,32,33&title=Harman%20Central%20Heating%20Solutions

Now we are talking. I like that furnace that can burn wood, coal, or oil, with oil as a main or backup option. The only problem with it is that it is only listed for 2,500 sf and the house we are looking at building is 4,300. Maybe I could get away with that unit and a wood stove in the basement to help it along. I'll have to research this some more when we really get down to it. Who knows, maybe another company will make something that will fit my needs a little better.

Just bought 2 metric tons of pellets yesterday. Gotten a little expensive this year. Cost was 235 bucks a metric. 198 for a US ton. Told them I would be back for another M/ton next week. That should run me for the winter for both the house and the garage.. I only burn it out there when I'm workin(reloading) out there. I have an electric water heater out there that I keep set on 42 degrees. It heats the floor so the cars ain't cold. An when it is 30 below..the vehicles are much more comfortable to get into and start. Truck is a diesel as is the VW Jetta. It actually costs less to run the heat in the floor than it does to plug the 2 vehicles in. Fabs...there is another type of furnace for heating a house with wood. Outdoor furnace that you can fill with wood and burns up to 3 days(specially in Md) and you don't have to split the wood so small or store it inside. Heck a friend had one he burned a piano in..less the works of course. He burned green wood and dry wood...old railroad ties...everything. The green wood did smoke a bit though. He even heated his domestic water with it all year. He has used that furnace for nigh on to 18 yrs now. I was gonna put one in in Md before I moved..may still do it here in Wy. A permit for cuttin wood in the Nat Forest is 28 bucks for about 5 cords. All dead trees too..even if it is pine for the most part. An I got nuff Russian olive to last for 10 yrs for my wood heat. Just nasty to cut. Got thorns 4 inches long.
