October 1st is the start of the east Texas squirrel season. I am prepping my shotguns, checking my shell supply and trying to talk my wife into making me a new squirrel bag.

What are you guys doing to prep?

Squirrel season is in here in Ohio, comes in the 1 st. of Sept. Been to hot to hunt them though, eather that or I`ve had other things to do. I prefer a .22 rifle though, HATE PICKING OUT SHOT!

Hehe yeah I have picked a pound or three of shot from squirrels before. BUT here over half of our season the trees are in FULL leaf and getting them with a 22 requires iron sights, and incredible targeting at eyeblink speeds. You may get one shot every two hours witha 22 here. With a shotgun you get seven or eight shots a minute. Most of the squirrel we shoot we do so with them at a dead run. When fall comes and the leaves drop thats when I pull out the old 22. Until then I just can't do enough good with it to make it worthwhile. Well that and we are surrounded by cow pastures. If you did miss a shot you are more likely to hit beef than you are dirt. Still I have to say a 22 in the head on a squirrel is a hard thing to beat though.

I used to float the river and hunt them with a shotgun. Had alot of fun and got some squirrels. I keep thinking I should do it again but never seem to get to it. Getting old I guess.
