A long time ago when the kids were still home, the Halloween season came. Before bed time, the kids had on the tv some of the wildest Halloween stories. Chainsaw killers, Screams that would curl your hair, people lost in the woods at night with some guy in a white mask after them and every other kind of wild critter your imagination can muster out there in the woods...BUT I still had to watch some of them with the kids...It is also the season for gettin in the woods early before light to hunt the 'big buck'. I parked at my favorite spot right in the middle of nowhere and ventured down a horse trail into the deep woods with my gun over my shoulder. The morning was crisp, stars were by the millions like glitter in the sky as I crossed over the ridge and stood in an opening in the field amazed at the wonder of this earth. Then it happened, I started to walk again down the trail when this big monster reached out and grabbed me from behind. It slapped me along side the head and grabbed me with it's tentacles that got tighter the more I wrestled with it. It had big teeth, slobber drooling from it's hungry lips... It came from deep within the bushy tree I had just passed wondering as in the movies I had just watched what strange things could lurk around the other side. It shook the bush wildly as I fought it off...thinking if only I had loaded this gun..........Whew what a relief it was to find out my rifle sling had hooked a branch as I walked past it shaking the bushy tree wildly as I pulled thinking something had grabbed my gun and those green briers do wrap around you like tentacles from an octopus.....well as I stood looking around in the dark to make sure nobody had seen what had done to myself I made it a point to never watch those Halloween movies again the night before I venture into the woods ......lmaooo..whew!....oh and wait till you hear of another time...when there was something that grabbed me......

Ok, just a note that I have taken 3 nice buck on Halloween night here in W. Pa. It is a good time to rattle them in...and all 3 years they came in and slid to a stop.....

Now for a another quick story...in the dark of night....walking from my house to the truck about 3am on a moonless night heading out to the woods, I was checking the field out because I noticed this huge black item standing there..I never noticed it before.. trying to adjust to the night, I didn't quite get a focus on it thinking what could it be when it started across the field heading right for me. Closing fast, I thought about how far the truck was as opposed to back tracking to the house but stood there in shock instead. I figured this must be how those people felt standing in the woods when someone with a chainsaw was after them.....I just stood there....it got closer and closer..I figured this is it...the end ...then it jumped on me and almost knocked me down but I was ready to wrestle with what ever it might be to the very end....I know this one had big teeth cause I could see them shine in the darkness.... turned out there was a stray black lab that either got dropped off or ran away from home but it was so happy to see someone ...someone that might have some food ...that it jumped all over me wagging it's tail ..licking...He turned out to be a nice dog and we had him hang around for years...a happy ending.....and Happy Halloween all.... No I am still not afraid of the dark....lmao....not yet anyhow....have a nice day.

I`m not trying to hi-jack a thread, but as to scary nights in the woods..

A buddy of mines dad once told us a tale from his most recent moose hunting trip in Ontario with a group of guys he ran with.
There was a new guy in the camp on his 1st hunt this year that seemed a little skittish about the woods after dark, especially after a few beers, and listening to wolf and bear tales that were being told around the evening fire for his amusment. They played on it, and had the poor guy afraid to leave the tent to pee by lights out.
They finally settled down for the night and this newbie fell into a nervous sleep. He woke up about an hr later grabbing for his rifle screaming that there was a wolf in the tent. My buddies dad said it took two of them to hold him down disarm and calm him. He said he was afraid the guy was going to go off shooting at shadows he was so worked up. The guy kept telling them was sure the animal had come in the tent and had sniffed him, he was sure had felt its "cold nose" on his leg.
It turned out the cold zipper on the guys sleeping bag was what had woke him and along with the beer and fireside tales he wasn`t in the best frame of mind to figure it out.
Don`t know if the story is true, but us kids were intertained anew by the thought everytime the poor guy was mentioned for quit a while after hearing it.
