The Lodge Poles that I observed that were Beetle killed had started to split vertically.....had a logger killed today up by Grand Lake while attempting to cut some. These things are becoming unstable. Just urging people that are around them to use caution!!!Looks like the Lodge Pole is the only one effected by them.

That's sad. I assume there are efforts underway to eradicate the beetles?

Duffy, not to my knowledge.....they are still trying to figure this one out. I first noticed some die off about 15 years ago...had no
idea what it was.

Duffy, In the early 1960s, the Bureau of Land Mgt.tried for a few years to get ahead of the beetles by spraying them. It didn't work. The beetles "hit" the sick and overmature trees. The best way would have been to harvest the old trees. Alas, environmentalists don't allow that because it leaves open areas where the trees have been harvested.\
It will be okay with them when the forest burns because that is a natural event. That is the mindset.

Larry, thanks for the info....I'm unsure if these trees can be used for anything.....as they are splitting. Area where we have hunted for years has been a disaster just waiting for a fire!
In bentonite soil, they do not have the root structure one mite imaging of a 50/60' tree.

Hey, as I'm through hunting the Routt, you got any suggestions on Wyoming?

Dan Morris, The only thing I can tell you about hunting elk in Wyoming right now is that we need snow in the high country and colder weather. We hunted the Bridger Peak- Singer Peak drainages two weeks ago and it was full moon and too warm; great camping but poor hunting. This is about 33 miles east of Baggs. I think the elk were feeding at night since it was light enough to read by natural light at midnight, and they were staying in the "dog-hair" lodgepole during the day.
My brother-in-law is hunting near Craig this week and I will find out if they did any good this weekend.
