A slow salute to all who have marched before me.
A crisp salute to those who march beside me.
A firm hand to those who will join the ranks to come.
And when it's my turn, throw a nickel on the grass.

I'm puzzled also.
Never heard that one before.
Now watch him come up with a simple answer and we will both feel like a couple of rubes.
By the way thanks to ALL those who remembered the DAY.
Best wishes, Bill

Within the U.S. Air Force fighter pilot community, the term "throw a nickel on the grass" embodies an expression of mutual respect and good luck from one warrior to another. It stems from the refrain of an old Korean War barroom ballad… "Throw a nickel on the grass, save a fighter pilot's ass" and was later immortalized by an unknown author's closing words in his Tribute to the Fighter Pilot …
"So here's a nickel on the grass to you, my friend, and your spirit, enthusiasm, sacrifice and courage - but most of all to your friendship. Yours is a dying breed and when you are gone, the world will be a lesser place."

Well kiss my grits. Spent 27 years in the AF and never heard that one.
"Course I didn't hang with Officers either, except the ones on our crew.
But they were mainly "trash haulers" before they got assigned to Gunships. The Navs and Flirs mainly came from SAC.
Thanx for the info.
Best wishes, Bill
