How easy is it to remove the lettering from an octagon barrel? I saw where one guy used a draw file technique to remove lettering, but that seems like it would take the metal down farther in one place than others?
I'm building a Lyman Great Plains Rifle and would like to remove at least some of the lettering on the barrel, like where it says to read the manual...
Does anyone out there have any experience or suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

MtnMike2, I kow the problem and the only way besides a milling amchine is by draw filing. You can blend in the area where you draw file it, or just leave the lettering as is. It is six of one and............. You may be the only one that will see the low spot on the flat. I would leave the lettering as is until you want to go the route of a new barrel.

Thanks Larryjk. I was able to draw file the lettering off. It takes some patience. The barrel is now all draw filed and fitted. I think it'll look fine once I brown it...don't think anyone will notice the area being any different.

Isn't draw filing a lot of fun! I should have said up front that it takes a lot longer to load the file with steel if you have it clean and dry and then load it with chalk before you go to the barrel. The devil is in the details.:o
