It's official

I'm headed to Korea for a year. An hour and a half from Boise to Sea-Tac then 11 1/2 hours from there to Seoul. Another couple hours on a bus from Seoul to Osan to Kunsan and I can finally relax. I leave Sunday and should be back mid to late Feb 2010. I'll still be on this board, though; it's not like I'm headed to the dark side of the moon. Take care everybody. Have a great year fishing and hunting.

Look at it as another opportunity. The bases in Korea, Japan have been there for a coons age. Most are pretty modern.

They have, or did have, when I was in Guam, excellent sports complexes. If ya play Softball it was a blast.

The bases had base teams and there was travel involved and league play. It was fun.

Good luck Buddy. Find something that interests you and stick with it.

I'm definitely looking forward to the experience. I've always said, you're not an AMMO troop until you've been to Korea:D I'm just not looking forward to being away from loved ones. But, on the plus side, I've heard the bomb dump at Kunsan is pretty tight. I leave in the morning but I'll check in as soon as I can. Catch you on the flip side

I don't know what it would be like now, but when I was at Osan 1963/64, things were not too tight security wise while a friend of mine that got Kunsan said security was extremely tight there. For example, we could take pictures of the base for most parts with one exception while my buddy said no photography on base at Kunsan was allowed. Off base was OK though.
One place you should check out if you get a chance is An Yang. It's the Hollywood of Korea and the scenery is beautiful. In Seoul, thee is a spot called the Korea House where tradition dances and music are performed. Well worth seeing.
Just out of Suwon on the way to Koon-ni range is some of the finest pheasant and duck and goose hunting imaginable. I even still have my Korean hunting license stuck in one of my photo albums.
If I ever win the lottery, I may one day go back to Korea just to visit some of the places I'd gone to. Take lots of picture. I came home with over 3,000 Kodachrome slides, some of which I sold to National Geographic.
Oh BTW, don't let the smell get to you. After about a week you won't even notice it.

Lilred. I must confess that dog is quite tasty. :) The only time Koreans eat cats is for medicinal purposes. I wondered about that when I was there and that's what the head houseboy told me. I did go to his home and ate a meal which was quite delicious. He didn't tell me until after we ate that I'd been fed dog. :eek: As I said, it was quite good. But then, I'd been on a few Air Force survival schools and ended up eating a lot worse stuff than dog.
Regarding cats, no I haven't had the pleasure. :rolleyes: However, a late friend used to trap in the winter for coyotes and bobcats and he said the bobcats tasted like pork, as did a mountain lion he once trapped.
I think much of the repugnance towards eating dogs, cats, whatever is more psychological than anything else. After all, they are meat.
Granted, here we do not have to eat dogs or cats, however, in a country like Korea and I imagine China where poverty is more rampant, Fido and Sylvester get to be on the menu.
I don't mean to gross anyone out, but those are the facts.
