I read a great artical about makeing drip shot and casting shot in a local mag called woods and water news if any one can get it it is good reading.
Dennis neely wrote the artical he does a lot traditional black powder hunting with a trade gun or as the traditional guys call them musket.

I guess making your own shot is labor intensive. I just keep a few 35mm film containers of #6 or #7.5 shot on hand for the .50 smoothbore and single barrel 12 gauge flinters. I also shoot sporting clays, so finding shot for the muskets is not a problem. I cast many rifle and pistol bullets, but casting shot never entered my mind. What is to be gained by casting shot?

He did say it was labor intensive but for the die in the wool guy that likes to reinact i could see how it would be fun.
I made my round balls for my side lock my brother gave me the lead or free and i had a good time.
The only problim i have now is i made lots of them and now have no reasen to make more i cant even find the mold.

If the panic buying that has hit the centerfire rifle and pistol world (due to the current political administration, which has said it will ban CCW, assault weapons, ect) hits the shotgunners, you may have trouble finding shot. The only bullets I can get for my pistols & rifles right now are those that I cast myself!:( Also, lead shot shot up from $14/25lb bag to over $50/25lbs a bag in the course of a year due to the demand from China, leaving many of us without a means to reload our shells.

Adam....it's kinda like making fire with flint and steel or doing your own food canning or bullet casting: it may be labor intensive, and you might be able to get it cheaper or easier, but it NEVER hurts to know how to do it before the need arises!;)

Guys,

Does one make "Drip Shot" by dropping the hot lead into water? I read were the old shot towers dropped hot lead 150 or 200 feet into water. What is the homemade process?

it is driped into a bucket of water and it is a drip not a round shot and he said it patterns well out of his trade gun.
I was thinking you could even go further and trim it down with side cuts.

Bought the issue in question on the weekend and read the article last evening. I'm thinking about trying to make shot by running molten lead through a sieve, into a water bucket. This might make it more spherical....looks like some experimenting is in order this summer while 'running ball'.
