looking for 22-250 advice

a local guy has a custom bench gun for sale. I was really more in the market for a Savage, but.....
I could use some advice from some of you 22-250 experts out there

I know some of the basics on what to look for in a used firearm, but not any real specifics or tricks of the trade. I'm more in the market for a gun for dogs etc than a bench gun. But I figured since his asking price was about the same as the new Savage I was looking for, it was worth investigating. He send a number of photos, including close up of crown etc

Hmmm...well some key items to look for are condition of the finish...any nicks or scratches in the stock...how the blueing looks etc...

With a heavy barrell its gonna be a bit heavier than a sporter barrell...perhaps too heavy to lug around all day...but will be more accurate...


Biggest thing to think about, if it isnt what you want then dont buy it!

I think I'd ask who made the barrel. If it's a good barrel maker, the rifle could be a very good shooter. If the barrel is a 59.95 special, not so much.
Also, what's the scope?

leupold rings with a Tasco scope. Not sure of the barrel mfg just yet.

I would guess that the .22-250 would be close to the new Savage in value with the extra ammo. I have a problem when I hear someone call a gun a bench gun and it has a Tasco scope on it. If your looking for a walk around gun forget it. If your want a gun that is for the bench or still hunting groundhogs it`s a fine gun. I picked up a .22-250 built on a 98 Mauser action in a Maple stock, weight 16 1/2 lbs. It was floor plated and had a Canger single set triger, I bought it for $ 200 from a guy that just wanted to get rid of it. The stock is worth more than $ 200 alone, but getting your money out of a custom gun is hard to do.

the 7 boxes are all factory ammo.

I'm not interested in loading myself (I have no time nor interest)

I am not a fan of Tasco although I have no first-hand experience with their target scopes. His decision to go that route was budget related.

My original plan to go Savage would involve the same "experimentation" with factory ammo too to find out what worked.

Which brings me to:
1) Is it possible to add a BOSS type add on to a gun like this ? The one on my .280 lets me dial in any ammo I care to feed through it

Hi Fiji, are you going after coyotes?
Depending how you hunt them, a heavy barrel might not be want you want.
Not to sound negative but since that rifle is about the same as a new Savage, go with the Savage.

Oh yeah, that would make a nice handy rifle. :p Its almost 3lbs lighter than my VLP and its still got a heavy barrel.

besides the savages are a 9 twist, better for long range than a 14 twist bench gun.
