I am used to that...all of our ATM's in Canada are bi-lingual...it is required BY LAW here that service is provided in English and French.

I think the issue is that for English he had to Press 2. That is 2, and not #1. I am guessing Spanish was #1.

I think you`re right.
My opinion is English should be the default language and you should not have to press anything to get it. If you want Spanish, Korean, pig latin, ect then you pick a number. Better yet learn to speak the language like my grandparents did.

Sounds resonable until you realize Quebec is province of Canada, just like Maine is a state in the United States of America. The rest of Canada speaks English just as we do here.
Maybe according to your thoughts, southern California or Arizona should officially speak Spanish because of the large Latino populations?
A country needs to speak one tounge, not a different one every few hundred miles. That way, seperate states, seperate languages, is why Europe is divided in multiple countries instead of being united..

No other provinces has laws in place saying which language should be more prominantly displayed...so wtf should Quebec say that French signs have to be larger and placed above english signs?
Its supposed to be a free country where all races, religions, creeds, and belief are treated equally.
And it is, unless you live in Quebec and dont speak french.
You may also want to reconsider that reasoning, the predominant language in Metro Vancouver is Cantonese.
There are many peoples in the prairie regions that speak GERMAN.
Where should we draw the line?

Most of the Europeans know English because tourism used to drive the economy until the Euro came along and made it way too expensive. I went to Italy in 2001 when the lira was still in place and almost everybody I ran into spoke English.
I hear ya, rubicon! I'm in west Texas and I see this sort of thing all the time. Really grinds my gears!

What makes you think they don't. Half the clerks in Walmart and most of the idiots working an McDonalds can't hardly speak a word of English. Some of the Micky D'd Hispanic workers will make you wait while they give preference to Hispanics in line behind you. I got a couple of them fired as I got their names and complained to Micky D headquarters.
later, I asked the manager who was also Hispanic BTW, if he's heard about my complaint yet? You can bet I get good service anymore, at least at that one place. I was seriously going after the manager for even allowing that stuff. I wanted his job.
This time of year when it starts to get warm (We were 101 yesterday, so it's getting warm.) I like to pick up a couple of breakfast burritos to eat on the way to the range so I can get some shooting done before it gets really hot. The Micky D is the only place that's on the way.
I agree with all who say make English out OFFICIAL language. It's come up before the Congress more than once so the question is, "Why do they keep stopping this?"

PJ....In response to your question "Why do they keep stopping this?"...I believe (IMHO) that it's because we have a liberal president in office who doesn't even know what country he is supposed to be president of. He certainly does not wish to uphold the morals and ideals that made this country great.....but that is another issue.
