Shelf Life for Powder/Primers

Gentlemen,

I have several pounds of various powders and several hundred primers that are 10-15 years old. Should I be concerned about using these for any reason? In the past I'd have just bought some new however, I stopped by Sportsmans Warehouse and MAN! Powder and primers are GONE!!! I sure hope I can use what I have.

Please let me know, if you know, if these are OK to use.

If they were stored properly they should be ok. If the powder crumbles when rubbed between your fingers or if it smells putrid, it is bad.

I'm still shooting up primers my Dad bought in the '70's. People are still shooting ammo made during WWII, so the stuff can last.

I store all my loading stuff in 20MM ammo cans.Ammo I loaded and other stuff dating back from the 60's still functions and chrono's excellent.Should last a lifetime!

Fifteen years? I have cans of powder that had been discontinued for 15 years when your powder was being made. And I have primers older than that! All still good.

Thanks for the good news! I havent reloaded for a few years but it looks like I'll FINALLY have some time for it now. I can't wait to use my powders all up. By the way what on earth happened to all the reloading stock? Is this all due to our new socialistic administration or sheer panic or greed or what! Whatever it is it is disgusting!!!

With powder you can tell by the smell. If it is still sealed it will last for many more than 15 years. As for the primers they will also last a long time if properly stored. The only way I know of to check them is to try some in empty cases and if they seem good try them in some loaded rounds.

I sometimes reload for a couple of calibers where primers are no longer available. Primers in those sizes were discontinued decades ago. Some of my primers are over 70 years old and they still work every time.
