View Full Version : Dove Prospects for the Upcoming Season

I am really optimistic about the start of dove season next month. Yesterday I started doing some pre-season scouting and saw a lot of birds. It's been a relatively mild summer around here but we had enough rain in early spring to make the grain crops shoot up. How about the rest of you dove hunters - are you chomping at the bit for the season opener?
By the way, as a natural skeptic, I broke down last year and invested in a couple of Mojo animated decoys. I thought it was going to be a waste of money. I was very surprised. I can honestly say that they really work. About the only problem is you have to be careful of not shooting your decoys. I have had birds land literally right next to them.

In my area, they are abundant! We also have the Eurasian Collared Dove......these
puppies do NOT migrate in cooler weather....this should give some extra shooting!

Funny you should mention them. I had never seen them before vacationing in Charleton, S.C. this past spring. They are all over the place down there. As near as I can determine, they haven't made it as far north as Virginia yet. I wish they'd hurry up. :D

We have 'em here too. No limit. They want to kill 'em all cause they are an invasive species.. The were here all last winter too. even when it was 20-30 below..

I have many farms with decent dove hunting. Great evenings are hit or miss though.
Doves are the start of a NEW hunting year as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly. I'm just looking forward to getting out into the field for some relaxation. Things have been really busy for me this summer. Might be the same thing this fall. Good from a money perspective, terrible from a cycling, hunting, and fishing perspective.

Dan:
I have been a member of Hunt Chat for a while but kind of strayed away. For what it's worth (probably not much) I am a regular now. And yes, there are some good folks on this board. Thanks! :)

You guy's keep rubbing it in. Dove in the People's Republic are off limits. No season. But they fly into Rhode Island and get their butt's shot off. Gotta get out of here.

There's a way for you to correct that situation! ;)
