A work associate commented Monday about a buddy of his had a 700 Remington "Blow Up" last week elk hunting. Had him bring it in today for me to look at. Kids dad had bought the ammo.....he was firing 7mm Express in a 7mm Mag......bullet exited barrel....actually killed a 4X5 Bull. Case had expanded to fill chamber and totally ruptured in several places..he caught a face full of blow out as it exited around the bolt!Aside from fear, he was OK.
Folks, keep an eye on your hunting partner AND his rig....some folks simply do not know better!By the grace of God...................

Spooky man, and a great reminder to keep an eye on the guy next to you...

Thank the Good Lord above, as he watches over fools and children.

I know because he's watched over me for a long time and my wife can't make up her mind which category that I belong into.

Really kinda of hard to call it an accident, more like stupidity. Thankfully no one was injured.

When I worked in a gun store, one of the most common demands I heard was, "Gimme a box of seven emm-emm bullets."

I NEVER knew what they meant. Did they want a box of bullets for reloading, or a box of ammo for one of MANY different kinds of seven-millimeter cartridges. And when I tried to determine the answer, they'd invariably get whizzed off and call ME the dummie.

I had the same experience as Rocky.
" I got a 7 Millimeter".
"Ok, 7 millimeter what?"
"I dunno, just gimme some 7 millimeter ammo!"
Happened all the time.

Different sort of gun accident.
Went on a call this morning to extricate a hunter from the woods after being shot in the abdomen.
Our text page said "shot with a 50cal".
He's still alive and was medevaced to a trauma center.

I do not know who requested the father to "fire his weapon once into the air to help them pinpoint their location".

I never like driving deer just for this reason although the results were always pretty good. Like someone showing up to drive deer with a 12a and buckshot. Da.

Good point to keep tabs on fellow hunters...I once noticed how fast this guy was with his shotgun shots..found out he didn't believe in the safety on issue..never hunted again with him..and guess what, I found out he later had been sitting in a goose blind with a few others when his shotgun accidently fired....nobody hurt..

Something to watch for and I state this with my own experience..I went to gunshop, bought a box of 223..later when I shot a groundhog, I got sprayed in the cheek enough to draw blood..from blow back around the bolt..(glad had high mounted scope due to lens size)...as I found out ...within the box of 223 ammo was one round of 222...it loaded fine, shot with one heck of a different blast though...so I and the gun shop owner figured someone wanted to maybe see the difference in a 222 and 223 round but had put them in different boxes...I do check every round now within the box..not just that the proper box is purchased..

Yup, another one that wasn't culled from the gene pool early enough.

Getting shot having fun, is not fun.

I do not hunt with anyone unless I know their hunting habits well. I do not intend on getting shot by an idiot by accident or otherwise.
Best,

I was at a gun shop many years ago when I overheard a guy wanting a box of 308 Browning. The gunshop owner asked if he wanted a 308 win, but he said it was a 308 Browning. The store owner knew it was a 308 win, but obviously he owned a 308 win in a Browning rifle. He was upset and wanted to find a dealer who supplied 308 "Browning". I guess he is still driving.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this. Years ago, Remington brought out the .280 Rem. but chambered only the pump and semi-auto rifles for he round. Power level was kept sufficiently low for those two rifles. People wanted the round in the M700 so Remington changed the name to
7MM Remington Express and made the load a bit hotter. Then people started mixing up the name 7MM Rem. Exp. with 7MM Rem. Mag. and shooting the round in 7MM mag. rifles, and now you know the rest of the story. It didn't take Remington long to change the name back to .280 Remington. I wonder if they then downloaded the powder change back to original levels? Just a very poor choice in renaming the cartridge IMHO. Still, people should pay more attention to what they should be using in their rifles.

Man, that's just a shame. I can only hope the kid makes it.

It isn't uncommon for chp requalification classes to be held at gunrange. I invariably stop shooting and stand behind the participants until they are finished. I have seen some of the worst gunhandling I've ever seen in my life. I don't even want to be in the same county as these people.

Oh, I remember these......what was used was clearly stamped 7MM Exp.....had to be old ammo or ....due to ammo shortages......they bought anything available.......

A while back I was at a gun show and this dude hde several boxes of remington factory .280 Rem. ammo for a decent price. I bought it and when i got home, I looked at the ammo for splits and grins like I always do and half the stuff in the boxes was matked 7MM Exp. The boxes were old enought that i imagine remington just might have used up some left over brass. Shoots just fine so no biggie.

LOL...really, no laugh...this is the inept crap that gives ALL shooters a black eye!...By the grace of God, nothing serious happened....on my suggestion, the receiver ring is oval....gun is junk! Did not reload..tossed brass and this was the one that let go!....Still, requires a minimal knowledge to know the difference in a belted case n a non belt!...amazing part is the bullet exited and actually killed animal at about 50 yd!

Man in the gun shop where I used to work came in for a box of 30 caliber. Said he had a Remington rifle but it only said it was a 30. Took me a few minutes to figure it out. Any guesses as to what caliber ammunition he wanted?

No they did not. As a matter of fact Hornady now offers their Superformance loads in .280 Rem. I have a left-handed fifteen year old Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker chambered in .280. I switched to the new 139 gr Hornady ammo this year and other than re-zeroing for the higher velocity the only shot I fired this past season was at a fat little Pennsylvania eight point. ;)

Dan,

Calling this incident an "Accident" merely shields gun owner ERROR! I have seen it far too many times; many gun owners assume they have firearms knowledge when in fact they are clueles. I guess we need to be our "brother's keeper" when it comes to gun smarts. Expect resistance from "know it alls."

Happy New Year, guys.

a shooting accident that didn't have enough injury

while hunting boar with dogs a lot of times we set up shooters to block runaway trails. The shooter in question (16 years old) was using a Winchester 94 in 44 rem mag. He was using ammo that his dad gave him to use. Dogs were chasing and tracking this boar that gave them a run for their money. Finally after an hour or he decided he didn't want to play anymore, and took the runaway trail to elude them. He came out into the open in a slow walk tired from the ordeal. The shooter took his time and planted one in the chest at 40 yards. The boar stopped, shook it off, and scurried away. The kid was dumbfounded and how he couldn't believe what just happened. He said it was the biggest boar he had ever seen. Once we all returned to the truck and heard the story I asked him to see his ammo. They were hollow points where the hole was so deep in the bullet it looked like it almost reached the primer. I later researched and found out they were CCI Blazer 44 SPL. The boar just laughed and shrugged it off.... I told him to have dad buy 44 Rem Mag ammo, and use these cartridges to shoot paper or rats, but he better double tap on the rats!
