Man shot at Tanner Gun Show

Adams County sheriff's deputies responded to the Tanner Gun Show at the Denver Merchandise Mart at Interstate 25 and 58th Ave. around 2 p.m. Saturday after a man was shot in the upper torso. The victim was transported to Denver Health Medical Center, where his condition was unknown.

Saturday afternoon investigators were interviewing "numerous witnesses," the gun's vendor and the "person holding the gun at the time of the discharge," said Sgt. Candi Baker with the Adams County Sheriff's Office.
"They were just looking at a gun," Baker said.

Russ Huntley , who was inside the gun show Saturday, told 9News he had heard someone had been shot in the shoulder and "there was blood all over the floor."

The Tanner Gun Show bills itself as the state's largest gun show with 700 tables displaying guns, knives, ammunition, reloading equipment, military surplus and hunting and fishing gear. The show, which drew fire in 1999 when three guns bought there were used by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris in the Columbine High School shooting, has run in some form since 1964.

It's not the first time there's been a shooting at or around the show. In March 2008 a 64-year-old Littleton man accidentally shot himself in the stomach with .38-caliber handgun in the mart's parking lot.
The show's website says it is illegal to have loaded guns inside the show. Security personnel disable most guns, looping zip ties through gun chambers.

This could prove interesting.......I've been to Tanner shows.....security at door..usually a LEO....and signs require that all CCW's be unloaded and a plastic tie
placed in a manner to disable the weapon.....palmed round? planted?...still, stupidity!
Ya always check the chamber YOURSELF before handeling a firearm! all things are not what they apear to be.................

All of the shows I attend require all guns, on tables or walk-in to be tied. Seems odd that someone would have a gun that was not tied in a 700 table show. Ties that disable are very necessary any more due to the freaks walking around, folks that will load a gun on a table and leave it just to see what will happen, etc.

I went to a local Sports club swap meet last weekend. Something I rarely bother with.

Not a single gun there was tied ! First thing I thought of was all of the yahoos I saw picking up the various guns saying..."what IS this" ???

10 minutes and I was out the door,

The question to ask the president of your local Sport Club is how are you going to respond if Joe picks up Larry's gun, its loaded, and he shoots Sam by accident, at your show? Mrs. Sam and the kids won't like that much.

So very dangerous in today's climate.

I quit going to gun shows years ago....any savings was quickly eaten up by parking fees, entry fees, ect. Not to mention that most of the stuff being shown was military surplus crap (there is a reason that the military doesn't want it!:rolleyes::D) and items that would be more suited to a flea market than a gun show.
The last time I went I saw to much horse play with firearms, and by people who should know better!:mad: Saw a dealer take and aim a laser site to the back of one of his worker's head......what an A-hole!:mad:

Dan Morris: Last evening the Channel 4 news out of Denver really played this up. They stayed factual on the shooting. Apparently, no one yet had a clear picture on how the gun happened to be loaded. They were all supposed to be "tied". But then they had to sensationalize the situation by saying that kits were for sale for converting semi-auto firearms to full auto and that explosives were available for sale. What the hell is going on and where were the BATFE guys? Most people know that even having a kit to convert a semi-auto to full auto can get you major time in the slammer. And explosives? Someone should get their butt kicked major.

I also went to a local gunshow this weekend, very crowded and not much muzzle control. I would like to see the dealers display their firearms with the actions open, but don't think it will happen. Bought 2 boxes of 380s and got out of there.

Larry, I haven't been to a Tanner Show in over a year........I didn't see any conversion stuff then...as to ATF, they are too busy watching the good guys and nitpicking on small dealers! As I stated,,,,all things aren't what they appear to be...........

Dan, I understand what you are saying about all things not being what they appear. The new owner of the Tanner show ought to get the news media and straigten out what is really being sold at the show.

Hey Folks,
I haven't posted for awhile but figured this would be on here.
Been a while since I went to a gun show ... may be a while before I go back.
I was at this tanner event when this occured Sat along with a 1000 other folks. Fortunately, my daughter and I were on the other end of the building when the round discharged, a buddy and his family were within 30'. Unfortunate fellow who took the round caught it in the chest and was listed as critical Sat afternoon. Incident happened right by the Entrance of show so Sheriff had that all blocked off had to exit through fire exits. No panic or folks running for cover, etc. I'm actually kind of surprised the media hasn't made more of this because it certainly was a ripe tomato for the antis. Really only a few possible ways it could have happened: Really ignorant vendor( no zip tie) : Really, really ignorant buyer (let's see if a bullet fits): Kid,nut job or lefty cuts safety zip tie drops round in closes chamber and lays it down and sees what happens.
Whatever the reason this type of incident certainly does nothing for gunowners and if in fact someone can be proven to be negligent or acted criminally it would be my hope they would prosecuted for their actions or inactions as the case may be. Haven't heard a thing about the guys' condition at this point. We as gun ownership supporters certainly don't need this incident to be thrown onto our backs.

First thing my father taught me: Treat every gun as if it were loaded!
Second: Don't point it at anything you don't intend on destroying.

You want a positive? Today's shows are 1,000% safer than shows of 20-30 years ago where there were no ties at all.

A partner and I put on shows for about 5 years. After he died, I got out of it, just lost interest and got burned out. While the show is running, there is not much rest for the promoter, there is always some jackass that needs to be thrown out, a vendor out of ice or something. The 100% tie rule and the enforcement of that rule is very necessary today.

I only had one discharge at my shows in 5 years and it was a dealer on Friday night with his personal CC gun. While unloading it (all show rule, no loaded guns of any kind), a 45 ACP, he shot a hole in the floor. He was immediately escorted from the premisis with his junk sumarily thrown into his vehicle and a good by - don't you ever come back warning....

After a quick internet search ... Statement from Adams Cty Sheriff office guy was from Laramie and will be okay, Satifactory condition .... still under investigation ....

Dan if the results of investigation are good for responsible gun ownership, page 13 2lines, if it makes good gun owners look bad Front Page and tied to every shooting incident since the beginning of time.

News blurd on local tv says "no charges will be filed" Stated that weapon was zip tied.....Adams co SO still investigating. I still do not see how it was loaded and fired while tied???????????? Human stupidity is definitely there.
