I have been in discussions with friend about what would be the ultimate pick-up gun. It would be used on anything from varmints-wild pigs.

We came up with the criteria as follows.

Range up to 150 yards.

Optics are optional because it will most likely ride on the front seat or in a gun rack and may lose it zero.

Affordable. You wouldn't want to spend a whole bunch of money in case it gets stolen, or damaged beyond repair.

Enough power to kill wild hogs, deer, coyotes, etc.

Could be used as a backup deer rifle or a loaner.

And last but not least, dependable. It should be able to be covered in dust, rain, mud, and manure and still function.

Three guns come to mind:

1.) Lever action in .30/30, as previously stated.

2.) Enfield Jungle carbine in .303 British.

3.) SKS in 7.62 x 39.

For more years than I care to count, a beat up but very functional Winchester M94 carbine lived behind the seat of my pick up truck. In fact I had a couple of those beaters tht I picked up becuase the price was right. One was only $100 because the guy said it wouldn't shoot for some reason. Easy fix was a new unbroken firing pin. The other was $120 because the guy needed money. When Wincheste quit making them, I took both to a gun show and came home $800 richer. I did keep a third one that was the nicest of the three. It just got to go ride in the truck. I does now.

I'd vote 30-30 lever gun, too. Winchester or Marlin, or even the new Mossberg 464- whatever appeals to you.

I used to always have a Model 98 Mauser in 8mm that had been upgraded with a micrometer receiver sight. Still the military two stage trigger and steel buttplate. Killed a lot of vermin and game with that. I still keep a couple around that ride behind the seat.

Marlin 336 in 30-30 winchester. Ammo everywhere and it will do the job.
