View Full Version : opening day mixed emotion
After a too long and hot summer spent shooting and blowing the triple thang while stuck in traffic i had found some birds in a grass field on sunday night. they were back monday and tues. only about 40 but it was for sure so i went solo on wenesday. lugged a bunch of stuff in, soaked by day light (6:00). i could hear the birds on a farm pond not far off. well by 615 a group of 15 made their way low over the corn. hooked up 3 hundred yds out. right in i tripled. within mins a group of five 2 came down and after two big flocks later i had 10 down in 20 mins. only used the call once, had no one two share it with and lugged it all out alone. it was rediculous, one bird got a load of 4's at 5 steps away. some how i drove home feeling less than satisfied with a full bag limit. Strange.... maybe labor day i can get a friend out. kt
good luck

Well KT...first it's not an awful lot of fun huntin alone..and even if you are shootin geese..it ain't goose season(you know what i mean)..and it do make ya feel a little piggy to shoot al those birds..specially when you're used to shootin a couple..Almost like shootin all them snow geese..that nobody wants. BTDT my friend But you know..it's a tough job..and you might as well be the one doing it LOL Get a few more.

Well as far as opening day goes, I'm going to miss the first8 days of our season, yuk! And then to add insult to injury the USFWS sent me 2 large folders of wing collection envelopes. Well, may be I can assist in their survey.
so this morn, despite my late departure from my watering hole i was up at 4 and off with a friend to the same spot. 30 mins before daylight some fella comes walking in with a flashlight and says "i hope you have permission, i aint ever seen you round here before" i said "listen big homey, i have been hunting this farm longer than you have been old enough to hunt." he told me we got two options to hunt together or fight over the birds. because he pissed me off i said sorry its not the way we roll so they sat up 200 yds out. little did he know i had listened to the bad grammar dvd so he didnt really have a chance. only a 3pack flew anywhere close to the farm. we locked them up and dusted them...... PA is getting to be a tuff place to be a decent sportsman.

Yep, I hate that crap. Ran into it about 5 or so years ago at a farm I have been hunting for over 20 years now. The guys were complete idiots, but I still hunted in with them rather than set up somewhere else and compete with them. We all ended up having a pretty good day.
I hear you about opening day. I actually skip the early season now. It is too hot and it is too easy to kill the birds. I don't want to have to deal with 10+ birds in 90+ degree weather. It is bad enough trying to keep dead doves cool until I get home.
Kind of like the year we got to "hunt" a golf course. We killed 35 geese. We could just walk up to them and start shooting them at every hole along the course. It was pathetic, but they were a nuisance.
Like Skeet said, it is a dirty job and somebody has to do it. Rather it be you than me. With that said, if one of my buddies called me up and wanted me to goose hunt with them, I would probably go.
