Here in Central Virginia the opening day of dove season was horrible. I sat out there all afternoon and saw a grand total of one bird. All the farmers around here cut their corn back in July for silage. It was either that or loose it altogether because of the heat and drought. Hopefully things will get better when it cools down a bit and some of the northern birds start migrating down here. Anyone else do any good?

Shot a limit on Saturday.. The birds are going to be gone tomorrow...if not today. 38 last night. 63 for the high today..back in the 70s for the next ten days..but nights in the 40's..Has been a fairly cool summer here..Winter looks to be long. Snow in the mountains round here lately..and on July 4th and 5th. Snow on the mountain across from home didn't melt all the way till mid August..usually gone a month before that.. We still have those collared dovies though..and they don't leave..no limit..bait unplugged gun and twice as big..ain't all bad about 'em.

Skeet, send me some of those "collared dovies" so we'll have something to shoot at. The closest I have seen those birds to Virginia is Charleston, SC. Some of your cool weather wouldn't be bad either. This has been the hottest summer on record here in Virginia, at least insofar as the most days over 100 degrees.

I've talked to my daughter back on the east. She and friends have kept me up to date on the heat..and the guy tilling the farm. He told me we lucked out and the corn is looking ok. Not great but ok. Had 6 friends shooting the dove field on the first day. Two of 'em put about a 100 ft of wire up tween two posts about 50 yds from the SFs. Said before they went into the field there was near a 100 dovies on it.. They limited in about 45 minutes..but those guys can shoot. The other patch of sunflowers on the place are still yeller. No water to speak of in the pond..maybe a 1/4 acre is all..but the resident geese are hangin in there. Hopefully when I get back in November we'll be able to shoot a few geese. Hoping to whup up on Fabs at Sporting clays too. I've bought two cans of Whup A$$ just fer him
