SS Ruger 10-22

Won a SS 10-22 while back, as I had 2 others, one I bought in 68, the other a full stock model, didn't know what to do with it. Decided to use it as a truck gun, but didn't want to scope it, but old eyes no good with issue open sights. Anyway I got a set from Williams that has a Guide receiver sight and a fiber optic front sight. Looks great, easy to see, now have to get it to the range. New SS model has a plastic trigger guard and barrel band with a blacken cringle finished receiver, nothing fancy, but practical.

I did exactly the same thing years ago to a .44 mag. autoloading carbine. I loved the sights but the gun ended up being a jammamatic. It's the only Ruger gun I have ever owned or had experience with that was undependable. My son's 10-22 has had thousands of rounds shot through it and I don't recall it ever jamming (at least when we used decent ammo).

Some years back I bought the "Walmart Special 10-22 Rifle" version, SS barrel, silver receiver, and birch rifle-style stock instead of the carbine style. Fits my over-sized Silverback frame better. :D
I spraypainted the trigger guard and buttplate silver, and added silver finish rings and scope, and stripped & refinished the stock to a golden oak color - she's a blonde now! That factory Ruger stock finish is gross! I literally could see NO woodgrain in it!
Besides the refinish, I honed the trigger and sear a bit, and did the 'pentel spring' trick - trigger pull is much better now! Otherwise it's still in stock form - no accessorizing. I use it to compare my older twentytwo rifles against - and they usually out shoot the 10-22! :eek:

Yep, works great but, needs an after market barrel, thus the big after market business for the 10/22. Ruger has a pretty wide tolerance schedule for their barrels and some of their barrels are just outlandish in bore diameter. With a good target barrel it will shoot well.

Most folks do not know that the US Olympic Team shoots the small bore Running Boar course with a modified 10/22, sporting a custom scope made up by Premier Reticle Co., has two cross hairs. I saw and shot one of the guns at our range one day where I was the Range Master. A young USAF Airman was a member of the team and brought his gun out to check the zero.

I have a friend back east who just bought a Volquartsen knockoff(huh??) of the Ruger..Good lord..a thousand bucks and he got it just to play with.. The last Ruger 10-22 I had was borrowed by a friend and subsequently stolen. He got it back but decided to buy it rather than return it.. I was not troubled with selling it. Have very little use for the 10-22. I even had a tricked out one. OK... but not my cuppa joe. LOL

The two 22 self loaders that keep on shooting no matter what in my experience are the Marlin Model 60 and Ruger 10-22, believe me I ve worked on most makes and models of semis. My most accurat is an older TC Classic, my favorite is my Dad's old Win. Model 63 first year of production. I don't have a Marlin but they will take a lot of abuse and still fire as will the Ruger.

I have had only one Ruger 10/22. Bought it from Wally World back in about 1993. Laminated Mannlicher stock. I have a Bushnell rimfire 3-9X on it now.
It has been a great little carbine, dispatching a LOT of squirrels and rabbits.

Also have a blued Mannlicher with a beech stock. Got it unfired last summer in the box, now just got around to scopeing it. Soon as it warms I've got 3 22 rfs to sight in. I really love .22rfs, feel like a kid again shooting them. Got my 1st one at age 8 and still have it a Rem. 510 that is now 63 yrs. old.
