You can take an old pot and beat it with a wooden spoon, or anything similar and just walk around the woods and shine the trees and find coon. This works best in early season and on youn coon, but I have taken some nice coon this way also. Use a red lens on your lite and the eyes will show up farther than you think you would be able to see them. If you want to put up with the hasel a carbide lite will find more coon than any other lite. I`ve never tried to call them, but I used to kill several every year by makeing noise and shineing trees.

Yep catfish is right carbide works best for shining, and there are several calls that work. He is also right that most of them work better on young coons than older ones...

Here in MI, we can't hunt them at night unless we're following dogs.....stupid rule, but one we still have to follow.
I bought some of those memory cards last year with the sounds of coons fighting on them.....went out and called in a few crows, but that was about it.
If I have to hunt during the daylight, what would be the best time to hunt them: morning or evening?

G O B, I used to think that any coon out in the day time was sick too, but in the last few years, 10 or so, I have seen alot of coon out in the middle of the day that definately not sick. I never had a coon call but have squalled them from dens with out a call. To get that done I think you have to have 2 coon in the den and get 1 neverius enough to run the other out. Calling time is any where dusk till dawn.

I have mewed them out making a sound like a lost/hurt kitten, also the injured baby squirrel call rubbing two quarters together will sometimes bring the younger ones out looking for am easy meal.

Cat food is a definite source of Coon attractant. Once they find it they will almost stop eating anything else. I have also seen a lot of them out in the daylight coming out to eat cat food, and they were not sick, but a lot of them got dead.
Since I've been in the house that I'm in I've killed 26 coons and about 21 possum. I've got three harassing my cats now and trying to take all of their food. Problem is I can't use the .45 cal lever gun, or my .22 ruger anymore because we were sucked into the city limits and they tend to frown on the periodical gunfight with the pest population.
I'm now working at expanding my coon and possum count by compound bow. Sounds like a hoot.
