Has anyone used a deer attractant product called Buck Jam? Its a syrup or gel consistency that smells like apples that you pour on the ground or on stumps? Just wanted to know if this stuff really works and see what opinions are out there on it.

Thanks!

I'm sure some of the attractant's work but the best thing I have found is actual food. We bait with apples and corn and the deer come to it. Baiting is illegal here and we use it to photograph.

We tried some c'mere deer this year and got nothing. In the past I poured cheap apple juice on a stump and they came. I'll not comment on salt licks.

Hi buckhunter,

I am not doing it for hunting purposes, just to view them. My oldest child is three and loves to watch the wildlife that passes through our property.

The thing about buck jam is like most food/mineral sources you have to consistently keep it out for them to get used to it and it really work. Otherwise you are depending on their sense of smell and them being downwind of the gel. However. If you are working a known run, say between a bedding area and a food plot or water. You can pour it on a stump just beside the trail (try to keep your own scent to a minimum) and camp out in whatever stand or blind you use. I have used buck jam, in my experience it does work, but not any better than a good consistent source of food like corn, and corn doesn't just dissolve in the rain.

Ever think about the old peanut butter trick?

Deer and just about every other critter in the woods love peanut butter. Just get a big plastic jar of peanut butter, take the lid off and nail the lid to a tree about door knob height off the ground with two roofing nails, screw the jar onto the lid and cut the bottom off with your pocket knife. When empty just screw on a full jar and keep on trucking. Very easy, cheap and effective.

I honestly have never heard of that.....but yeah...sounds effective!

Yep the peanut butter thing works well too. The whole point is to get the deer to stop and "smell the roses" long enough for you to put him in a position to be "pushing up daisies". Anyway enough with the quotes. PB works too, BUT here is a BIG caveat. Squirrels also LOVE the PB trick. Soooo start it in early squirrel season and start clearing them out and dumping them in the freezer. Not much is more depressing than watching a two pound squirrel run off a 12 point buck from your peanut butter.
