Caps?

For you caplock shooters, is there anyone here who has a
preference for a certain brand of caps? I've done well with CCI, and prefer to use their 'magnum' cap while hunting in cold conditions, but I' haven't used much in the way of other manufacturers......I think that the only other ones I've tried were Remingtons and CVAs (which were a European make...Spain or Italy....and didn't work for crap!). I don't even know who makes other brands out there; I thought RWS (Germany?) made some?

On a similar note: Is there anyone out there that makes their own caps? I thought I heard or read somewhere of a device that will make caps out of old beer and soda cans.....thought it might make for an interesting off season project.

I used to use all kinds of caps and found as you did that the CCI were the most consistent..although I did have some RWS I think many years ago. As far as the tool to make percussion caps..it was made in the past by Forster. I had one at one time and it did work but the priming supply was pretty weak. You used toy cap pistol caps by cutting the center out and fitting them in the cap made from aluminum. Using a little ol Merican ingenuity though you can make better priming compound. Sold mine years ago..or anyway it has disappeared. Keep an eye on ebay and you will see one ever now and again. There was also at one time an adapter that used pistol or rifle primers and it was really great. Don't remember the name but I sold a few back a lot of years. It was slow to use though if I remember right..it was sealed I think. I was told that they never failed to fire by one of the people that bought one.

I suppose I have Product Loyalty since all my reloading primers are CCI and all my caps are CCI #11 for my percussion arms. I use three T/C cappers and ONLY CCI caps work easily through the gizmo. When I try Remington caps, they hang up. I called T/C and discussed the problem with Remington caps in their cappers and was told, "We heard that before."

My ONLY primers or caps are CCI.

I've tried a few different brands on my ML. The CCI #11 magnum caps work best, so that's all I use now.

Just thought of the name of the Forster cap maker..It was called Tap a Cap I think.. With the oldtimers I have remembering isn't a given..it is an event...LOL..Fulminate of mercury is easy to make..Lead styphnate not as easy. There are other primary igniters that can be made such as silver Acetylide which also isn't hard to make..but if it ever comes to having to make primers..Mercury fulminate will be the way to go.. I actually know a guy that used to reload primers with mercury fulminate..but just to show he could

I, too, have been a CCI fan for a long time....not only just for caps & primers (I have used others, in a pinch), but for my .22 rimfire needs as well......have yet to find a rimfire load that shoots as well in ALL my rifles (and 1 pistol) other than CCI.
