The local state gamelands rifle range opens at noon on Sunday so I go out before noon to pick up brass. The regulations regarding shooting hours are posted all over the place and on every shooting bench. Nearly every week, the local Deputy Game Warden writes up folks that cannot read or tell time and start shooting early. The fine is stiff and can result in the loss of the weapon and a fine for every round more than the three rounds permitted in the firearm.

Last Sunday, I arrived at 10:30 A.M. and the Deputy was writing up two early shooters. As I continued to pick up brass, I heard the older gentleman get a bit surly and disrespectful toward the Deputy. As he was writing the field receipts, four more shooters walked past him and started shooting. I approached the deputy and told him that I was a witness and he took my name and address. The deputy proceeded to write up the four new arrivals. As I was leaving, another shooter arrived and was ready to start early shooting. The deputy warned the last arrival of the established shooting times. The shooter seemed to be amazed at the rules. Like I said, you cannot fix stupid.

Starting April 1, 2011 anyone using Pennsylvania state gamelands rifle ranges must have a valid Pennsylvania hunting license or pay for a $30.00 annual permit. Each license or permit holder may bring one guest to the ranges. All the best...

Dan,

The Regs are POSTED and Ignored until the Officer starts writing up the miscreants.

I bought a 60-acre farm in 1988 with BIG Hills out back for impact areas so I do not have to put up with folks who cannot/will not abide by range rules.

It seems like if you stay around public ranges for even a little while you see and meet some folks that should not be wandering around loose without a leash or at least a full time guardian.

Actually..the ones you write of really should not have a firearm in their possession.

Now I do have a maybe dumb question..Why do they have a time posted when you can start to shoot?? I can understand if people are close..or churches etc..are they close to game land ranges?? I can understand a fine..but the loss of the firearm?? I'd have a little fight over that one I think. Wow..wouldn't it be neat if people who went down the road over the speed limit could lose their car?? If you see the corollary

The noon start time on the ranges on Sunday is probably based on the old blue laws like not being able to buy a beer until noon on Sunday. Another reason may be based on safety concerns. Without posted shooting hours some yahoos might try shooting tracers in the middle of the night. All the best...

What will happen is they end up closing down the range for everyone...they did that here in Pa gamelands up road from home...ohio guys would x line, bring tv's, bottles and even fridges onto range, blow them up and leave the trash...as well as blow up the backstops...every week...so they just closed it down. Hope not happen there..glad to see you clean up the area..shouldn't have to but is way of land anymore...slob in the bunch somewhere.

Without reading anything in this thread; I totally agree with the subject of this thread. :D You cannot fix stupid, plain and simple. We should let nature take it's course and remove the warning/safety labels off of everything.
