I'm just curious as to those of you who like to shoot traditional BP firearms....why do you do so? Do you just like hunting with them, are you just into reenacting (F&I war, civil war, War of Independence), or are you just into shooting?

Me? I am pretty much just a hunter, although I like to try and make it as traditional as possible as far as my equipment goes.....no plastic, if at all possible. I cast my own projectiles, and keep my 'speed loads' loaded up in glass vials topped with a cork. Make a lot of my own 'stuff', including ball bags, ramrods, ect. However, I draw the line when it comes to traditional clothing on a hunt....I'm too old to give up my rubber boots, gortex gloves, and polypropylene long johns. I do, however, wearwool pants and a red 'voyager' hat while hunting with the muzzleloader.
I enjoy watching the reenactors, but I just don't have the time to do that right now.
I have a buddy who is just a shooter....he likes shooting BP, as well as older, antique firearms that he has repaired, and older military rifles as well.

BTW: The poll is set up for multiple choices, so if you do more than one, you can vote for all that you feel apply.

So, what's the skinny on the rest of you?;)

Mr. 16 gauge,

Excellent poll! It will be interesting to see just who does what on our site. I am a Bucktail and reenact with my Civil War unit. I hunt with flintlocks and caplocks. I cast all my own pure lead projectiles and wear period-correct dress in the Traditional Flintlock (PA) deer season after Christmas. I would liike to find a French & Indian War reenactment group locally since a lot of F&I history occured right here on my farm.

With me, BP extends the deer season a few weeks otherwise I probably wouldn't own one. I have only modern inline plastic stuff. I do like the old traditional arms but how much can I get involved in and keep the Secretary of State happy.

I'm not a purist, either. I use a ML to get another week of deer hunting.
My ML is a traditional type CVA I picked up used at a good price- it works.

I do have a few Muzzys..but as I hate to clean them I use my Savage most of the time..Smokeless powder..but still a muzzleloader. I also have an original Pa Rifle made in 1799(I've even shot it)..but it was converted to percussion in the 1840 era. The other that I shoot occasionally is my TC Hawken 50 cal..Percussion. I use to shoot my original Colt handguns but they are kinda too valuable to shoot anymore..specially the little Baby Dragoon. I did shoot the Navy Arms Navy Colt a month or so ago. A friend out here(he's from Maryland too) really likes to shoot Black. Even likes cleaning them "Blick". He's lookin for a real cannon to shoot. His wife...is NOT wanting a cannon. LOL
