Probably not what you expected, but I'm a bit P.O.d right now, esp. after a rather hellish week at work.
My wife lost her toy poodle a little over a year ago to heart disease & old age; she was 14 when we finally had to have her put down. 10 days earlier, my 5 year old chessie had to be put down for an unknown kidney ailment that took it's toll rather quickly. Even though we only had him a couple of years, and my wife didn't want him initially, she became quite close to him and I think his death bothered her more than her poodles because his death was so unexpected.....he really liked to give 'hugs" (he'd bury his head in your chest with all the strength his 95lb frame could manage).
So we got the Labrador puppy last fall, but she's a bit of a 'wild child' and my wife really would like something that she can hold and cuddle with. So she started looking at some of the local animal rescue sites on line and found a cute little 7 month old Chihuahua mix that needed a home. However, when we called and tried to set up an appointment, we were immediately deemed "unfit" as potential owners.....because we have 'big' dogs!:eek: The idiot that my wife talked to told her that the big dogs will KILL the small dogs, and that they won't let people with big dogs adopt. My wife is now very depressed and upset.
I did some checking, and found out that this is somewhat 'standard' policy among most 'rescue' groups....what a crock!!! We had the poodle when we had big dogs, and she ruled the roost; the 'big' dogs didn't mess with her, and she actually would go and take their toys and treats away without a fuss. The whole thing has me steaming mad....here we are, trying to make a place for an unwanted animal, and instead of being thankful that someone wants to take her, we are denied....because, essentially, we are not 'breedist'. (or sizest:p)
I know I will no longer waste my time trying to get a dog from a rescue organization, and the next time they appear at the mall for "adoption programs", they are going to get more than an earful from me! We'll find my wife a pet, but at what cost? More unwanted litters? I think this whole thing is just some some people can have 'control' over others....
O.K., I'm done ranting.......thanks for listening (reading?)

Mr. 16 gauge,
You got it RIGHT from the get go! In 1996, the year I retired from federal service, I went to the Strattford, NH SPCA. They had two dogs I bonded with; a Blue Tick and Yellow Lab and it was $25 per dog to take them to my PA 60-acre farm. I also saw they had two horses that were adoptable for $100 each. Since I have had horses in the past and have a big barn, I filled out papers for the two horses as well as the two dogs. A nice young lad working at the SPCA said he had a two-horse trailer donated with the two horses out back and for $350 he would trailer the horses next day to my farm in tandem with my retirement relocation while I led the way. NOPE!!
The female manager of the Strattford SPCA came into the office in riding togs from riding one of the horses. She REFUSED to allow me to take any dog or horse from the SPCA. I was stunned and asked, "Why?" She said, "Neither horse can leave New Hampshire. Before we allow you to have a dog, we need a signed statement you will NEVER use the dog for hunting." I advised her both dogs were hunting dogs. She said, "We have a policy here that NO dog may ever be used for hunting and no cat can ever be a 'mouser!" I lived in NH for 26 years and wished to adopt four animals and got NONE. SPCA sucks in my humble opinion. SPCA is anti-hunting and politically active far beyond finding homes for abandoned animals.
In 2005, here in PA we found a nice young dog (age 3 months) and adopted her out of the Wellsboro, PA SPCA shelter. On the day I picked up Lori dog, I asked the fat slob and hostile clerk who took my $75.00 check, "Has this dog (which had resided in SPCA Wellsboro for 3 weeks) had a rabies shot?" She said, "How would I know?" I advised it was very unusual for animal control folks not to ensure all resident dogs on establishment had a rabies shot. I reminded the fat BIMBO that Wellsboro SPCA had four Rabies Clinics per year where rabies shots were given to all dogs present for $3.00 per dog. I demanded my adopted Lori dog be given a rabies shot. Fat Slob hostilly said," Ok, I will give your dog a rabies shot, but it is NOT a GOOD shot, merely a kennel shot!" The dog got the shot and I wrote a letter to the PA SPCA Headquarters in Philadelphia documenting all above and NEVER was given the courtest of a phone call or a written reply. SPCA has an AGENDA that in no way benefits the foster care animals in their custody.
The SPCA sucks and I will never get another dog there. I will NOT give one PENNY to the hostile SPCA Ding Dongs. I experienced their hostility towards folks who want to HELP animals.

In reading these two experences, it does not surprise me at all. Years ago I knew a gal that ran a shelter in a very populus county who was a hunter. Too bad she did not want to put up with the so called board of directors and got out.

popplecop,
The SPCA HAS an AGENDA and the "Foster" Animals come a distant second! I will NEVER give one cent to the dickheads running the SPCA. Been there and done that and the Higher SPCA Headquarters are merely BIGGER DICKHEADS!

Just to clarify:
This is not the SPCA/Humane society...it is a private 'rescue' group. There are a lot of breed rescue groups out there as well. Some, such as the Chesapeake bay retriever rescue group, don't have any provisions against hunting the dogs....but they will tell you if the dog is gun shy or has no prey drive. And while I have never worked with them, I believe some of the other more popular breed rescues (German Shorthair, English Springer, ect) don't mind the if the dogs are hunted either. I will continue to support CBRR&R because I feel that they are doing right by the breed (chessies), and I haven't heard of any stupid stuff like we have recently faced with this group.
These private 'groups' are staffed by armchair experts....if they don't like something (such as hunting), then they will not allow you to have the dog. They have all sorts of 'scientific proof' (albeit pseudoscience) to give credence to their BS claims. Or, if they don't like big dogs, red dogs, dogs with big eyes, if you are of a certain ethnic group or religion, ect., ect., then they have a 'clause' that allows them to deny you the right to adopt. But the prices???? $400 to 'adopt' a dog? That's almost as ridiculous as paying $1200-$1500 for a 'designer' dog (i.e. a mutt!) I payed less than that for our current lab, and she is from great hunting stock.
These people are just full of themselves....as we said, we'll find another source, probably in the local paper. Piss on 'em!

I call BS on that deal Mr. 16 (not you,....lol the "shelter.") I'd be made as hell too. Like you, I've always had Chessie's. Then Rebel died and I got myself a Mountain Fiest (JRT with longer legs). At the same time I won a Lab puppy auction at our local Delta WF banquet...oh boy. Talk about mayhem in the house...good gravy! Get this: it was the Fiest that worked the lab over daily. I'd have to break it up all the time. They would have been best pals in no time. And yes, Lab's are goofy and hell-o for their first two years. I'm going back to Chessie's next time :)

That really stinks man. Common sense is dead in most folks these days.
I'm kinda angry right now because some ignorant jack--- decided to abandon a boxer or boxer mix at the folks' place recently. They've already got 2 large dogs (which by my count is 1 too many, given current circumstances) and do not want another one. I suspect I'll have to deal with that problem.
Idiots can abandon pets at their leisure, but someone wants to adopt a pet needing a home and gets turned away? Figures...
Humanity is in a really bad way...

A local animal shelter had various dogs looking for a home. I made the necessary inquiries to get a beagle pup . You would have thought that I was adopting a child. They wanted income statements, tax records, house plan and asked who would be home all day to keep the dog company. I have had dogs and cats for most of my life and know how to give pets compassionate care. I was rejected because I was a single person who had to work five days a week. I found an adorable female English Springer Spaniel puppy from a private party and we are now very happy. Take care...

I call "BS" on the "Big dogs kill little dogs" nonsense. Might be true if two strange dogs meet. But a now-retired co-worker had a Yorkie that lorded over a Golden Retriever - they were best buddies. Both are now in 'doggy heaven'.
She now has a Lab she rescued as a puppy one dark and stormy night, then later acquired two JRT females. Those little mistreated JRT girls were understandably skittish of the Big Dog at first - now, he's their doting big brother and protects them. And they know it! Any trouble, they run up under Big Brother! :D
I once knew a woman who worked for the SPCA - they are a goon squad. Totally agenda-driven Libtard Whackos.......

Many years ago the SPCA was banned from soliciting money in the state of Michigan. They refused to file a non profit organization statement with the state.
If the NPO's of the humaniac groups were actually made public maybe the idiots suporting them would cut off there funding. NO probably not most of there supporters are not that smart enough or they wouild see through them in the first place.
Cleveland Amory the founder of the Fun For Animals got a round of applause when he worked around my question with out answering it, about the $10,00 that showed in his NPO as possibly going to help an animal out of $750,000 that he took in.
The two Grand Rapids cops the were sent to keep us from causing trouble were smart enough to see through him. One of them said "I wish I could take off my uniform and help you pass out your booklets. What a jerk."
