New Acquisition

Lookin through the local free paper I found a Ruger #1 A in 243. Guy was looking for a nice American made double gun so I called him..He came out and looked over the ol Parker Trojan I have had for a while. Shotguns do not sell well here BTW. Now the ol Parker was in really nice condition for the Trojan Grade. Being the cheapest Parker they got used ...hard. This one was about 75% as new..Still had some Color Case on the action..Blue was good. I put a price of 1500 on the Parker..Back east 1900. Guy wanted 750 for the Ruger 1.. So I ended up with a really nice #1 in 243....and cash. Not my most favorite caliber but It will sell here and the Parker would have been a long time getting gone. I found out a month or so ago that Ruger quit making the 1B guns..darn shame. If I keep this thing I will probably turn it into a 1B in 25-06 as I have a barrel and some wood for that purpose will probably make it an Ackley Improved too.. But I have 5 25 cal rifles now..Duh!!

Skeet. I have a #1A in .243 and I have to say it is one of my fun guns. I hear you on the #1B being discontinued which doesn't bother me all that much. I have two for them in 25-06 so I'm set thee. One is a tack driver for sure with 120 gr. Speers and I have yet to shoot the other one wihich is a very recent acquisition.
The Ruger #1 rifls I want are the "S" model medium sporters. They have that classic look of the old Farquharsens that I think are so cool. If you saw The Ghost and the darkness, the rifle that misfired when he faced the lion is a Farquharson. The last one I saw for sale had a $5,000 price tag and was in one of the old british Nitro Expess cartridges. I'll behonest, I came darn close to pulling the cash out of my savings to get that one. :eek: I do have two of the "S" models, both in .300 Win. mag. One is a great shooter using my pet 200 gr. load but the other is a 1976 "200th Year" gun and I haven't gotten around to shooting it yet. I'll probably try it out if I draw a tag for elk. I have three #1's in .300 Win. mag. The third one is a "B" model that is a .375" gun with 200 gr. Speer Hot-Cores at 2950 FPS.
I like the Ruger #1 rifles and Ilike hunting with them. I guess that says it all for me.
Since I sold that custom #1 I had in .223 Rem. to a friend who just had to have it, I've been using that .243 as my walkabout rifle when roaming the desert. Makes jackrabbits and coyotes run in terror when I show up. :D:D:rolleyes:

I picked up a mint Ruger #1B in .30-06 for $595.00 with a scope. I plan to keep it. I would have preferred a .270 Winchester or a .280 Remington, but you take what you get when you can get it. All the best...

Well I've been buying again.. Got a nice Ruger SBH with holster and ammo for 400..guy even gave me a bunch of Remington factory 41 mags too. I never turn down 41 stuff. The guy also had a post 64 Winchester 70 in 375 H&H..but wanted too much for it. Had a Leupold VX 3 1 1/2 x 6 on it....but still too much. Got a Ruger 77 7mm Mag..used abused a bit but good bore and wood for 400 with an older Leupold variX 3x9..best buy of the bunch though was a nice Browning Sweet 16 A Belgian made in 1965..about 90% or better.. some blue missing on the barrel. wood was pretty good and it was a vent rib..with, if I got the stars etc right, a cylinder bore Kinda hard to find 'em with an open choke..Best I can say about the Sweet 16 is...I'm drivin it like I stole it. Now it being a Browning means it is gonna go down the road. for 3 reasons..first I don't care for Brownings..and it IS a 16 which I have no use for..and did I say I don't like Brownings.. or Auto 5s all that much. Lookin in my 3 yr old Book of Gun Values they are saying over 1200 bucks..which is ridiculous in myopinion but I remember 'em being 170 bucks..duh..I is gettin OLD

As far as the Number 1s.. I had a first year 22-250 and Oh My Gosh..It were a real shooter. Even with some of my homemade bullits it was a half inch gun..which is good for me...long as ya didn't shoot it hot...Shootin groundhogs ain't that fast of a shooting sport so no real problems there.. Had a few others but it were the best shooter. Not a great hunting rifle(1Bs) as they are kinda heavy..but the 1-A may be ok. I have to shoot my Kimber 25-06 a bit to see how it shoots..If it shoots like the others..I'll leave the 1-A alone. Gil you did good on the 30-06 and it is still a GREAT cartridge. Good fer ya my friend
