I am starting a project of orientation for new members at our local gun club. We are the largest gun club in Pennsylvania with over 5,000 members. I am on the Board of Directors and we are concerned that new members are being added every month and we have no idea if they have ever handled a firearm or attended a hunter safety course. We have observed unsafe gun handling practices on our ranges and have issued warnings and dismissed members.

Successful completion of the safety course that will be put on by hunter safety and firearms instructors will be required prior to submitting a membership application. What are you good folks doing at your gun clubs? Take care...

The range I am a member at require a "Range Officer" to be present at all times.

As a range officer it is your responisbility to make sure any shooters under your "DIRECT" supervision are safe and following the rules.

To become a certified range officer you are required to take a safety course through the shooting club. Takes about 8 hours, and just makes sure you are familiar with the range safety rules, with an exam at the end.

To become a range member you already have to have taken a firearm safety course, which is required in Canada to obtain a firearm license.

Joe,

I totally agree, we need to Orient New Club Members. At my prior NH club, we required new member APPLICANTS to attend a 4-hour Saturday morning orientation from 0800 until noon with a written test at the end. Those passing were ISSUED a Club Membership Card.

Our insurance provider gave us a 15% annual discount on our Club Insurance because we screened applicants. Not ALL Applicants are a good risk!
