I found an Encore bbl today. it is in a caliber I'd like to try but wonder if I really need it. The caliber is the 338-06. I had an old Win M-70 that was chambered for the caliber but had it for such a short time I never shot it. Anyway..the bbl is pretty much as new with a junker BSA scope and a new set of Redding dies. At least I think he said Redding. Didn't look at the dies. Bbl has been mounted on a gun but doesn't look fired. They want 280 bucks for it. Scope is crap..but the dies and bbl should be worthwhile. What say y'all? Anybody ever loaded for and shot the 338-06?? I do have a 35 Whelen and a 338 Win Mag. dang..I think I am trying to talk myself out of it. Is it a good 'un?? or should I pass??

Pass...You got it covered with the 35 W and 338 Win.

I would also pass. There isn't anything the 338x06 will do that the 35 Whelen won't do better in a standard head cartridge and then you throw the 338 WM in the pile and it becomes a why, issue, rather than a why not issue.

Well I was just thjinkin.. I have about 300 .338 210 gr Noslers..thunk I could use 'em up..also have a couple boxes of Barnes bullets too I do not like shooting the 338 Win Mag 35 Whelen isn't quite as bad on recoil..

If the rifle is is nice shape I would buy it in a heart beat and I already have a 35 Whelen and a 411 Hawk. If they are Redding dies they are worth $ 50 to $75 and that make a nice cheap rifle. You should know that I love wildcats and have several of them now.

Well it's just the barrel scope and dies.. It would sure be lighter than both the other rifles. I like TC stuff. The Encore is ok..But I really like the Contenders. Bought another one at a gun show a week or so ago..but that is another story. The same place also has a 6.5x284 bbl scope and dies..but it is a kinda blah caliber in my estimation..And i am not a 6.5 fan anyway

Pass.....as long as you have been doing this, if you gotta ask for reenforcement....you don't need it! JMO.

WELL...I declare.. Never looked at it that way..Dan..I think you are right. Been bouncing it off of my huntin partner too..he pretty much says the same thing. He asked me about buying a Montana Rifle in 375 H&H. I even asked him ...WHY?? Puts it in perspective for me.. Think I will pass After the election..think I'll buy another AR...or something even more enjoyable What I would really like would be a (real) BAR..but can't afford the price.

Since when has need become part of firearms purchaces? I have never let that stand in the way. I just got an old S&W K-22 and a Md. 17-2, sure don't need both, ust the old 5 screw, but now have a back up that I'll never need. Go for the barrel price is right, just throw the scope on the table at next gun show.
