U.S.House votes to stop massive DHS ammo purchases

On Wednesday night, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from purchasing anymore ammunition until DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano explains to Congress why her agency has recently acquired a stockpile in excess of 1.6 billion rounds.
Initially, Napolitano claimed reports of the unprecedented purchases were false, and later simply refused to answer any questions on the matter.
Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) sponsored the amendment to the DHS 2014 budget.

There were other questions that came up in Congress as well:
What does DHS need 2,700 plus, mine resistive armored vehicles for?
Why did DHS order $143,000 in submachine guns then order $900,000 in parts.

It appears to many members of Congress that this administration is trying to implement gun control, by eliminating ammo availability and possibly parts. However, with the ongoing revelations about various sectors of this administration apparently abusing the hell out of our rights, other more onerous practices or plans may be driving the inquiry.

Meadows told his colleagues:
"Given this large purchase, the American people and members of Congress rightfully had concerns and questions. This is a responsible amendment which ensures that Congress and the American people are aware of the necessity and the cost of ammunition prior to entering into new contracts for procurement."
The amendment passed largely along party lines by a vote of 234-192.
On March 5, Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in which he asked several questions about the agency's recent massive ammunition purchases.
Congressman LaMalfa wrote:
It has become clear that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is purchasing vast quantities of ammunition, considerably more than historical use would suggest is needed. Over the past ten months, more than 1.6 billion rounds have been acquired, and recently the Department posted another solicitation for additional large purchases of ammunition.
Unfortunately, the Department has yet to explain why ammunition purchases on such an astonishing scale are taking place. Estimates show that this much ammunition would be enough for 24 years of the Iraq War and comes out to five rounds for every person in the United States.
The Congressman went on to ask several important questions, including the following:
-How many rounds of ammunition does Homeland Security currently have in its possession?
-Are these purchases being conducted in a manner that strategically denies the American people access to ammunition?
Read Rep. LaMalfa's letter in its entirety...
Napolitano has yet to respond to the letter, according to LaMalfa's staff.
A few days after LaMalfa sent his letter, the DHS posted details of a yet another no bid contract with weapons manufacturer Sig Sauer, worth $4.5 million over the next five years.
The contract is identical to the one DHS announced last week with Heckler & Koch.
Both contracts are for $900,000 worth of "replacement parts" a year, for weapons used by DHS agents.
While it is hard to imagine how or why a domestic agency could anticipate firing their weapons enough over the next five years to need $1.8 million annually in replacement parts, the DHS documents clearly state their need to "stock sufficient quantities of parts needed to fulfill the quantities of parts anticipated to be ordered."
In April 2012, DHS purchased $143,000 worth of sub-machine guns from Heckler & Koch.
See the details of that contract...
Of course, it was also recently discovered that the DHS is purchasing 2,717 'Mine Resistant Protected' vehicles for urban use.
In light of the Obama administration's push for gun-grabbing legislation, a flurry of "multi-agency training drills" inside our cities and towns, the dismissal of several well-respected military leaders and the purchase of urban tanks, along with nearly 2 billion rounds of ammunition, combined with this administration's total lack of transparency...one need not be a conspiracy theorist to be genuinely concerned about the imminent threat to our freedoms, as well as to our very lives

Rapier,

This is very scary stuff! The fact of 2,717 ARMORED vehicles and 1.6 BILLION rounds of ammo indicates the days of our Republic are numbered. The NEW ORDER is not far away, IMHO!

I am sure NSA has a copy of this as I type and I am "ON THE LIST!"
