Today at a local yard sale I found a lovely white-colored cow horn, about 7.5 inches long, all cleaned out inside, for One Dollar. The horn needs to have a base plug fitted to the larger, two-inch diameter bottom and the tip needs to be cut for the powder-measure tip I will make out of an empty brass cartridge case.
I also found a nice nylon gym bag that will be a muzzleloader range shooting bag for $1.50. My current ML bag is too big and heavy. Get a smaller bag and it will go lighter.

Dixie gun works use to sell fiddle pegs and base plugs both for such projects. I think Crazy Crow trading post did too at one point. I would be interested in pics when it's done.

GOB,
It is good to hear from you! I fit my wooden base plugs in my shop. I trace the butt end of the horn on the wood, cut it out and then rasp it to a snug fit. I then glue the plug in place. I have some veneer grade cedar that has a nice red color for the plug. On the tip, I use a fine hacksaw to remove a small piece and then fit a wooden plug with a rawhide tether.
I will try to get my son to do the pictures.

Thanks Adam, good to still be on this side of the ground. Sounds like a good way to do it. I was recently gifted a completely rebuilt Pietta Confederate Navy .44 (Yes I know the originals were .36s :p ), and I have a single shot .50 pistol as well. I haven't gotten to fire either one, and don't know when i will get to, but I've certainly been bitten by the black powder bug. Had a .45 rifle that was supposed to be headed my way in trade, but then the trade fell through. Caps are impossible to come by in my part of the woods anyway so I don't know why I'm getting so hung up on the front stuffers, but hey I like 'em.
Anyway back to the horn, I bet it will be a real beauty when finished.
