As Memorial Day approaches, I kinda like this quotation..
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the man who died. Rather,we should thank God that such men lived"
George Smith Patton

Patton was a great combat commander and, sadly, wouldn't be allowed to serve today. Can you imagine an area commander saying of the Taliban that "we're going to rip out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks"?

He's be cashiered for being "insensitive."

It's a sad pass we've come to.

Dan,

Excellent post. I liked Patton and my Uncle Marty, master sergeant, was in the 3rd Army. His claim to fame was having his butt chewed PERSONALLY in March 1945 by George Patton himself! As Marty told me, it was midmorning and he was walking along a road with a file of fellow infantrymen in the other wheel track heading into Austria. There was a jeep coming up from the rear and the infantry stepped aside to let the jeep pass. As the jeep passed, Marty waved. Immediately, the jeep reversed back and stopped beside Marty. On the front right fender was the 3-star pennant of a Lt. General and standing in the rear seat position was Patton. He yelled to Uncle Marty to stand at attention and render a hand salute, which he did. Patton's jeep then proceeded on.

I trust Patton and Marty are getting on ok in Heaven. The war is over, and we won. Patton's best quote was:" Wars are not won by dying for your country, it is by making some other dumb SOB die for his."
