petey,

Excellent videos; I like seeing a good dog work. Did you do all this pheasant hunting on your land or a regulated shooting ground?

heck last week I was coming up the road to home and a fellow was crossing the road with his GSP. fesant hnting they were. Course i stopped and let 'em get across. I like bird dogs. Asked him if he had gotten a bird and he said no..but he had missed one(huh?? How do ya miss a chicken?? Only one he had seen. I think his dog was P O'd at him for missing. Well anyway..went on up the road..and so help me this is the truth. There were 7 pheasants and about 15 chukars back of the house dusting themselves in a couple of spots they have back there. I've shot a few pheasants...mainly when I was walking around with the contender pistol that I have in 45/410. Awful hard to miss one at 10 yds up in the air in front of ya. But heck, I can't even get within 12 ga range of those dam chukars. Think a pheasant can run?? Chukars are the Jesse Owens of the bird family...plus they can also fly...but they never need to. I like good dog work! Nice Petey.

skeet,

Excellent post. In the early 1960s we have many pheasants in southeast PA.

I recall one Saturday morning , circa 1961, we had a corn picker machine and neighbor operator come pick our corn and I had to work and could not hunt birds. As the machine arrived, we also had a man and his wife and another couple bird hunters arrive at our farm to ask permission to hunt. Dad said they could and told them to go up back and get their pheasant limit.

About noon, all four folks came by the house and thanked us for permission to hunt. Dad asked, "Did you all get your limit?" One man said, "No, no birds even though we saw plenty. The problem was, every time we drew a bead on a pheasant, it took off."

WELL, DUH???

I grew up bird hunting. Bird where I lived was quail. I also hunted in Western Md for grouse..just like hunting for quail in the woods. Came to Pa down in Lancaster county etc shooting pheasants in the 60's . We didn't have 'em in Md...well at least none on the eastern shore. I don't think they turn 'em out in Pa like they used to. Or so it seems I have read. Don't know how many there are on the ranch here..quite a few...but they can't take much pressure. ground sluicing 'em just seems wrong. LOL!!

My previous experience with Pheasants had only been on preserves. That changed during my last waterfowl hunt out west when we jumped a few birds that were hopping from CRP to ditches. You can only take so much of this action before you leave the blind. The ducks/geese were slow but adding my first wild birds made the day.
