Once again model 70, ignorance overwhelms you. This is how the conversation started. A slight upgrade to a 30-06 would be best if one is concerned about group size.

Oops, the orginal thread states nothing about deer hunting. So for all we know he could very well be using it as a bench rest gun. So if accuracy is his goal and all we know is he likes to shoot then why not recomend a much smaller, lighter recoiling round that is FAR more accurate tha the '06?

What's next? You gonna go over to the shotgun forum and tell all the guys asking about 870's and what kinda groups they can expect with sabot slugs to just get an '06?

Group size was the original concern from double d: the 270 isn't a caliber capable of accuracy that the 30-06 is, which is why that was my original recommendation: if I was concerned with group size, not simply on-game performance the 270 wouldn't be a wise choice. As a 1st time user, I was pointing double d down the road to success of accuracy.

I am not the only one with this experience of the inaccuracy of the 270. When group size is the concern(savage is an extremely accurate rifle, it's just the caliber that's the problem) the caliber is a factor in the capability of the rifle. Read this link: when I state the inaccuracy of the cartridge, I do not stand alone in my beliefs.

The 06 or 270 debate has been going on for years and it wont end here.

So what kind of groups does the 30/06 posses that the .270 just can't muster? I find it very hard to believe that you could take a Savage bolt action off the shelf in 30/06 and .270, test a few factory loads in each and see a SIGNIFICANT advantage in group size with the '06.

I wish I could take the advice of some magazine article and go by that alone. Maybe I'm just a piss-poor shot but I saw no smaller groups in the 30/06 I shot vs. the one in my .270 I hunht with every year.

First time users? Yeah, the .270 pushing a 130gr. bullet is far worse to start the first time user out with than a 30/06 with a heavier bullet selection:rolleyes: .

BTW The Savage is a pretty well made accurate rifle...in whatever caliber... and the 270 will be just fine for most of the every day guy's uses. And the new accutrigger really is a BIG help with accuracy. Luck with your purchase Double D
