Present for my son
 

Went out today and picked up my son's first gun. I bought him a Rossi single shot. It's the youth model, and comes with 2 barrels. The one I got him is the 20ga / 22LR. Not a bad little gun, but the fit and finish leave sonething to be desired. I tried to buy it at the local shop, but they were out and wanted $179. I stopped to Dunham's Sporting Goods. They had it for $129, with a soft carrying case. Decided to pick up a scope and stuff for the 22 barrel, and also grabbed some Casey's Tru - Oil to refinish the wood. While I was looking over the gun and waiting for the paper work, I noticed the butt plate was a terrible fit. Stuck out around the stock nearly a 1/4" in spots. Then I saw it also had a small crack in it. Pointed it out to the clerk, and she gets the manager. He says he'll get me a new one if I want too. Looking it over, I figure I can fix it, so I ask him if he'll nock anything off. He hims&haws, and finally says he'll knock off $25. SOLD!!!!:D

After getting the gun home and cleaned up, I completely disassembled it. I took the butt plate off and spread the crack and supeglued it back shut. After reinstalling it, I took the dremel and sanded it fit the stock.
As I write this, the second coat of oil is drying on the wood. I'll post some pics when I get it finished up.

Might seem like a lot of work to some, but I enjoy doing this... and there is no reason an inexpensive gun has to look that way;)

Rossi has some nice stuff but this one must have slipped by. I am sure the new owner will love it.

I didnt think much of the gun till i shot my cousins muzzle loader and my frends doughter has one in 410.
She has lots of fun hunting with it
My wife bought me mine becouse i asked for one for christmas
for the muzzle loader i had to go with her to pick it up they wouldnt give it to her becouse she said it was for me.
For the price you cant beat the gun its like savage or mossberg
they aint pretty but they do what they are intended.

First guns are always Long remembered I am sure the extra work you put into it to make it look nice will be remembered as well

I've got one of those, that I use to teach my grandkids to shoot. You've made a great selection.

I have one grandson that just wants to shoot as fast as he can. The break action, single shot keeps him from burning through too much ammo! It's really a good system for kids... safe.

With the short barrel, and light weight, you'll want to run very light loads when you shoot 20 ga. With regular loads, even the adults won't shoot mine more than once.

That's kind of what I figured. I'll definately make sure it as liht a load as I can get for him to start with. I had thought about getting the 410 combo, but decided once he got used to the 20, it would be more versatile for him.

Just got done with the 4'th coat of oil, hopefully I'll get 2 more on tonite yet and see how it looks. Also got the scope semi - mounted up. Should be fun for him to shoot, and it'll get him used to a scope.

your a good pop first of all, nice job. but secondly i want to second the emphasis on that things recoil. shoot that thing yourself first, i had shot something similar made by NEF a year or two back and coming from somebody who shoots hundreds and hundreds of 12 ga each year that little thing still amazed me with it kick. if so he'll enjoy the .22

My plan is to let him have the first shot with the 22, and then get it sighted in for him. After that, I'll fire off a couple of the 20's to see what it feels like. Even then I'm sure I'll have him wearing a heavy winter coat, regardless of the temps. The last thing I want is for him to be afraid of the gun.
By the way (bragging time:rolleyes: ), I took him with me 2 weeks ago when I shot my new Springfield XD9 Pistol. He had never fired a gun other than my Ruger 10-22 before, but he took to the pistol like duck to water. I had him shooting at about 10 ft and he blew the heck out of the bullseye.:D Think he's hooked.:p

You can get a "recoil pad" thingy that you wear on your shoulder. It's about 1/4 inch think and kind of stiff so it spreads the recoil out. It really helps.

Here are a couple of pics of the gun tonite. The close up really doesn't do the finish justice. For a cheap wood, the grain really came out nice witht he finsih, and it has some nice depth to it. Kinda think it could be covered in mud and he'd still be happy tho:D

Hey man...a nice job on the stock work and all. Really makes ya happy to see the work come out the way you want it to... Also nice job on bringing another shooter into the fold. We need the kids to keep our sport viable and strong. Hope he shoots it well and for a long time. Congrats bud!:D :D

I always had guns available to me, but never had my own till I went out and bought one. My 1st gun that was mine was a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. Of course I still have it.

Whenever I get in a shooting slump... I get that one out and remind myself that I DO know how to shoot.
