most popular calibers to day.

what are the most popular today.

model 70 10-02-2005 06:46 PM

probably one of the newset ultra booming mags or maybe one of the iddy-biddy SHORT mags?

no seriously the same ones that have been popular for decades;

30-06sprng
.270win
7mm rem mag
.243win
.300win mag
.223rem

come to think of it, i bet THE most popular round is still the .22lr in terms of sheer popularity and sales.

Last time I saw a list of the most popular 5 rifle cartridges, by ammo sales, was a few years back. But, it was:
30-30, 308, 30-06, 270, and 243.
Don't remember what order they were in.

im putting together a list of what i think the most popular calibers are. some of these have faded in popularity but made my list.

im also researching these to figure out what the old popular calibers where and when they faded off. and the years our popular calibers that we have now where brought up.

so far ive gone back as far as 1912, but im still getn my list together.

Evan, I think the first Weatherby Magnum cartridge was the 270 Weatherby. That goes back to the 40's, and I believe the 270 Wby was around before the 257 Weatherby.....

I haven't seen it recently, but one of the companies that makes dies, I thing it was either RCBS or Redding, used to produce a list of the most popular selling dies. I think that also would be useful for determining the best selling calibers. Has anyone seen that data lately? It would really be helpful. Best wishes.

I think Jack might be right on the money with the five he listed, and in that order. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

this thread went alittle off topic but i got going off topick so i guess its alright.

as far as when the weatherbys came out i wont right anything in stone since if got conflicting information

but if i was to think like roy weatherby the 257 would have been first.

but maybe even back in the day roy didnt think like roy weatherby.

According to Midway thier most popular rifle bullet sales are 30cal, 7mm, and 6mm. I guess that would be a good indicator of the most popular calibers at least for reloading.

HPBTMTCH 10-20-2005 11:53 AM

Could try least popular, tryed to trade a win. super shadow in .223 wssm, could not even get $50 for it in trade at a few stores. A 22-250 would have been different i bet.

RUMLUVER 10-20-2005 03:09 PM

HPBTMTCH,
If you don't mind me asking is there in reason in perticular that your trying to trade it. i.e. any problems with the rifle or the caliber thanks

Evan03 10-20-2005 10:32 PM

its a way difrent critter than the wsm. my wsm would feed smooth as silk just like anny other calibers i have.

but id imagine the very very stubby wssm case may lend it self to feeding problems. ive heard of a few. other than that they seem to be fine. alot of guys say they dont shoot then some guys swear theyre the best thing since sliced bread.

kinda why i like chevys over ford. i can talk up the chevys but maybe the fords are better or equal.

i kinda like the stubby case and may have one some day.

myswell give the 243wssm a try since ive tried the 270wsm. funny thing is i want another wsm but id like to build one in a 25wsm. or possibly 6.5 or 6mm wsm like your talking about doing.

skb2706 10-21-2005 12:18 PM

My opinion....based on no real fact.
.204
.223
.22-250
.308
.270
30-06
.300 Win mag

But of course it would vary dramatically depending on where you live.

RUMLUVER 10-21-2005 01:18 PM

The only additions I would suggest to that list you made would be a 7mm RemMAG or a .280 and a 25-06. But other than that it looks good to me!:p That 6.5mm looks real intresting but the only hang up I see is seating those bullets deep in that WSM case since 6.5mm bullets are so long!:)
