270 too light for mule deer
I was reading a gun rag and it said a 270 and 270WSM with a 130 or 140 grain bullet was not a good choice for mule deer past 200 yards. I tend to disagree with this since, they praise 100 grain 25-06 and 257 weatherby as IDEAL. I am heading to New Mexico with a 270 wsm with 130 ballistic tips and 140 accubonds and have the upmost confidence with either load. Am I crazy or are they pushing a different bias?

Just another writer BSing to try and get some interest (positive or negative) in his mindless ramblings. The .270s are probably the best all-around deer cartridges.
You're not crazy, but I wouldn't put any weight on anything that writer pushes from here on out. Just for sheer morbid curiosity, who wrote that? JMHO gd |
IMO, a 270 is a fine cartridge for mulies. One of the best.

This is like 50 years ago thousands of Elk were killed with 30-40 Krags and 30-06's. Today most of the writers seem to think that Elk now have armor and you must have a 300 wiz bang big bore Magnum to kill them.
Its just another line of BS. Take you 270 its fine for everything in the lower 48. One heck of a cartiage. |
The article was in Rifle Sporting Arms Journal (May 2009). I can shoot 3-4 inch groups at 350 yards with my 270WSM and have the upmost confidince in that rifle. I just read that article last night and I guess it made me queston my choice in rifle selection. I just wanted a second opinion to keep my hopes high.
Backup rifle by the way, will be a 30-06 with 150 gr Ballistic tips. (I guess the gunwriter will think that will be a poor choice also) |
Redram,
Go with your .270 and forget the gun rag "gurus." Adam |
Man, there is thousands used every year............I alternate tween my n06 and 270....
just depends which one I grab!!!! Dan |

The 270 is an excellent choice for deer. I use a 270 Weatherby mag and 130 gr ballistic tip handloads. Been using that load for years. Deer bow in its presents:D Anyone that says that a 270 is not a good caliber for deer is just plan "nuts". I load 130 gr ballistic tips over 69 gr of IMR 4831. Over 20 mulies with this 270. It doesn't matter whether its a 270 Wea, 270 Win, or a 270 WSM, deer don't know the difference.
Have a great hunt and let us know how unhappy you were with the 270's performance;) muledeer |
Heck the .270 is not good enough?? yet they recommend the .25-06??
I use a 6mm rem most of the time... pushing 95g Nolser Patitions at around 3000fps... It has taken several deer both whitetails & mule deer... nad these are the big northen canadian deer! |
It is a lot easier to get high velocity and instant kills with a typewriter than in reality. IE; writers always tell the unbridled truth.

In my younger days I'd wanting some of the stuff that writer is smoking. 270 not good for deer. ....LOL

I am a big fan of the 270 i just wih i could hunt with i t a little more.
It just is not the newest flaver. I wish i was given a new gun and a paid hunting trip so i can go kill 200 point class deer and I could praise the best new caliber. |
.270 is obsolete for sure. I'm still shooting my Father's Winchester Model 54 in 270 Win. I have shot whitetails, mulies, antelope, coyotes and a bull elk with this caliber. Obsolete my foot.
