Who on earth shoots a .50 BMG

Do you shoot a .50 BMG or other insanely large and powerful caliber? What do you hunt with it and at what range?

fabsroman 09-04-2007 07:43 PM

And what are you asking these questions for? Do I shoot one? Nope. Can I afford one right now? Nope.

Now, if I had won the Mega Millions lottery last week, I would have several of them, along with reloading equipment for it, and my own range. You can bet that I would be hunting the heck out of paper targets. Wouldn't be a bad gun for grizzlies either. Not bad on an elephant or cape buffalo. Only problem is the weight of the gun for those hunting situations, but I would definitely prefer that cartridge for those dangerous animals.

Andy L 09-04-2007 09:19 PM

I made a vow and intend to keep it to own one soon.

I will hunt deer with it.

Tater 09-04-2007 09:32 PM

I bet it would do a number on prairie dogs, too

gd357 09-04-2007 11:12 PM

I'll have one ASAP, probably a ways down the road, but one can always dream...

My reasoning? Quite simply because I can, and for some reason, it's comforting to know that if dinosaurs ever return, I'd have something to fend the off with. LOL:D It would make a great long range round for anything you cared to hunt with it, and although it is probably too much for anything I'd ever hunt here in the U.S. except for the big bears, I ususally prescribe to the "Dead is dead" theory, where there's no such thing as overkill. And as Andy stated, I'd have to try it out on deer.;) :D

Swift 09-05-2007 01:39 AM

I've shot one.
I don't own one .
I would own one.
I'd shoot ghogs at insane distances!

Dom 09-05-2007 04:39 AM

Well, my largest is a .375H&H Mag, but I wouldn't call it insane :)

Now a 50 BMG, it'd be great to shoot, as long as you're buying me my ammo :D

Most use it for sport / range shooting. This is not a weapon you'd want to carry very far, unless of course, you are a big guy and enter Strong Man Contests, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Andy L 09-05-2007 07:20 AM

When, not if, I get my grubby paws on one, there is no way Im not sittin up a tripod, or something like it, on the edge of a huge field or ridge (even better where I can see a mile in any direction) and deer hunting with it.

Like GD said, dead is dead. There is no way I could resist shooting a deer, after I get comfortable with it, at long range. As long as you keep it in the ribcage away from the legs, I doubt any meat would be hurt.

It may even eliminate the need for field dressing.

.50 BMG

once again, the wonderful state legilsature of the republik of kaliphornia decided its citizens should not be allowed to own one of this or larger, caliber.

as many of you are aware of, once they were outlawed here, ron barrett of barrett rifles refused to work on the LAPD's .50 BMG's saying; "that's an illegal weapon, i will not work on it..."

good for him!

he in fact relocated his business to a more firearms-friendly state as a result of the action of our state legislature.

anyway...

i was able to fire a mcmillan .50 BMG during a trip to the great state of arizona.

very impressive...indeed.

i would not use one for anything but long distance target.

it would destroy anything smaller than a cape buffalo.

very expensive ammo and reloading

but, nevertheless, would be fun to try to hit a beer can at 2000 yds...

Adam Helmer 09-05-2007 02:20 PM

minihuntur,

Last year at the club a fellow had a bolt action .50 BMG and let us fire a round each. I am glad I had ear plugs AND muffs on as the muzzlebrake is LOUD! Actually, the recoil was not too bad.

I will get one someday to keep the chucks at bay on my farm. If the lightning don't kill 'em, the thunder WILL. LOL.

Minihuntur 09-05-2007 10:28 PM

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I got one

from a man I know in Wyoming. If I can get it lugged up in the mountains I will hunt an elk with it. Older Semi Auto. Heavy and not much recoil... As stated ...LOUD

fabsroman 09-07-2007 11:17 PM

I'm crying over the gun and the car, but you need to straighten that picture frame out. Sheez.

Dom 09-08-2007 01:41 PM

Just a comparison of what we're talking about, took a couple pictures that kinda give a relationship and I found quite interesting, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

You Must Be Crazy

Anyone who would even CONSIDER owning a 50 BMG must be sick, demented and totally insane. You're the guys that give the rest of us shooters a bad name. By the way, what would something like that set me back?

gd357 09-10-2007 07:03 AM

:D ;) Nice one! Now I know where I fit in! LOL!

Adam Helmer 09-10-2007 07:06 AM

Contenderizer,

It sounds like you have been reading Sarah Brady's website! How does owning and shooting a .50 caliber give gun owners a bad name? I know two folks who own and shoot their .50s responsibly. I have a neighbor who has two Civil War cannons and he shoots them in his hayfield and at reenactments.

As I recall, a Barrett will run about $2,000+/-; Muledeer will have the "hang tag" price. I noticed .50 BMG reloading data in one of the recent handloading manuals.

Adam

fabsroman 09-10-2007 07:47 AM

Adam,

I think Contenderizer was joking. Kind of like saying "your car is a hunk of junk" and then opening his garage to show you he has the exact same one.

Adam Helmer 09-10-2007 11:24 AM

fabsroman,

I suspect you are right. If not, then we all know some folks do not like pistols, "plastic guns", semi-autos and on and on.

Adam

muledeer 09-10-2007 12:52 PM

I paid $2,800 from a 77 year old retired Marine Sarg/Major at a gym that I go to. He decided he didn't really need it and it was "new in box". M 99's sell for about $3,400 (I think).

Contenderizer 09-11-2007 02:59 PM

Of course it was a joke. Had I put a :D on it, it would have been too obvious.

I was wondering though; here in Florida we have awfully big rattlers. Does anyone make snake shot in BMG?

;)

jmarriott 09-11-2007 03:23 PM

$7.50 a shot reloaded with your own brass i believe.

1000 shots would cost about 7,500 dollars. I bet a used one would not be shot out.

Adam Helmer 09-11-2007 03:32 PM

jmarriott,

I will save you BIG BUCKS on your .50 BMG ammo purchases. On page 8 of Cabela's "Shooting Reloading 2007" catalog that came to my mailbox today it says, ".50 BMG 650-Gr. Ball Per 50 $94.99." That is about $2.00 per round, so save much.

Andy L 09-12-2007 08:43 PM

Adam, I got a good laugh a while back while in OK. I had some time to kill while waiting for a skip to get home. We took a break and went to a gun shop, nice one, in McCallister. There was a 50cal set up with front and back pods and great scope. The package was a little over 5k. Right beside it was a stack of pamphlets for financing. I started laughing and the guy behind the counter said they finance alot of guns thru a loan company. As long as the loans over a c note they will do it.

I had to laugh. When I start FINANCING guns, Im pretty sure I will be single. LOL :D

fabsroman 09-13-2007 12:01 AM

My wife would kill me if I financed a gun. Credit is one huge problem with our society. Too many people want everything right now, and there is a lot of everything out there.

Financing things you buy for a hobby is utterly nuts, but I guess plenty of people do it.

Ridge Runner 09-13-2007 08:34 PM

I don't own one, don't really want one, its overkill for hunting. but reloading isn't that bad, the powder for those things is 4 bucks a pound, so you could reload for real cheap. I shoot the same powder in my 7mm Allen Mag (7mm/338 lapua Imp.)
Got a cousin who has one, and I have shot it, basicly its a high dollar toy, unless your a sniper you don't need such a beast, I can take deer out to 800 yds with my 7mm AM and it is capable to 1500 if my abilities were up to par.

I don't fire a 50, it's too small--- Take brass and make
12GA FH and 700HE cases, for real thrills. Ed
