98K misfires

My 98 was giving multiple no-bangs even with factory loads, head space was way out, rebarreled and brought headspace back in. Still gives an occaisional no-fire but may go off if rehit. Anyone have a similar situation and what was the cause and cure? Oh yeah, it's a Chilean job, not a Kraut original, has the seal on the ring.

Check the firing pin protrusion. Should be .055-.060. If it's less it's time for a new firing pin

Welcome to the Forum.

My experience with '98 Mauser misfires was caused by a weak firing pin spring. A temporary fix may be to stretch the spring to increase tension. The right fix is usually to replace the firing pin spring. All the best...

Been there, done that. Any chance the bolt to action dimensions are worn, haven't any info for that. Gages correct on go/no-go and battlefield gage. curious if there is a lug to lug to internal action dimension to consider. Thanks for the comebacks!:D

Try changing the grease in the bolt, it my be so old that its like wax or there is a bunch of dirt and carbon that is built up over the last 50 plus years. Tear apart the bolt and clean and polish the firing pin (not sharpen it).. The hole that the firing pin comes out should be clear of all dirt and fouling.

Guys,
All good answers. I would entertain all of them, strting with the cleaning, lastly the bolt being shot to hell.
