Last sporterized military rifle

I just returned from the local gunsmith. He is a swell guy, good friend and a master craftsman. A few months ago I bought a sporterized Springfield 1903A1 with a ruined bore and a drop-dead gorgeous stock. Midway had '98 Mauser barrels on sale in .280 Remington and I took everything down to friend Lester. He had never fitted a '98 Mauser barrel to a Springfield, but assured me it could be done.

The barrel was fitted with mimimum headspace, the action was blued and everything looks great. I plan to shoot it this weekend. All the best...

Well, how'ed she do? Been wanting to try .280, sounds like a good gun/cartridge combo.

It did just fine

I loaded up some 139 grain Hornady Spire Points ahead of 52 grains of IMR4350 and Winchester WLR primers. At 50 yards, the bullet holes were touching. The 100-yard range was occupied so I did not get to shoot at that range. The .280 Remington is a fine cartridge and this is an impressive rifle. All the best...

Sounds good, I used to use a lot of IMR4350 in simular sized cases. Always seemed to find a good load with it. Done a lot of reading (not BS hunting stories), on the .280, ballistics, and such, I believe it is a VERY good caliber.

best to you and yours...
