.270 recoil question
 

I am about to buy a new deer rifle and don't have the luxury of trying out any of the potential calibers I am considering so I thought I would get some opinions from you guys. How do most of you feel about the recoil in a 270? Do any of you feel that the recoil is tough to deal with and prefer a smaller caliber or am I worrying about nothing? I am a good sized guy but am now in my 50s and hate to get shook around too much. Should I consider acquiring a .270? Thanks...

For a really good caliber for deer you couldn't ask for a better round. Others are as good...some not as good but the 270 is a deer killing round. Doesn't kick on the back end either. I have 3 but one will never be shot again as it is a collectible(Pre=64 Featherweight Supergrade 99%) but I bought it as a deer rifle. Do it

Stock design makes a big difference, had an Interarms with a lot of drop that would rattle your teeth. May be just me but seems that there is less felt recoil with the composit stocks. .270 is a fine round but there are others that you might prefer if recoil is an issue. 7X57, 7mm08 etc. Anyone you know got a .270? Most folks will be happy to let you shoot a couple of rounds from one. Thats the only way to be sure that you will be happy with it.

A 270 is not a big kicker- I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I were you.
A big factor in felt recoil is rifle weight, as well as stock shape.
A 6 pound rifle will kick a bunch more than an 8 pound rifle.
But,a normal weight 270 should give you no trouble at all.

120 lb doughter absolutely loves her pre 64 .270.Darn accurate
and fairly mild recoil.Of her guns, this is the favorite.

can't go wrong 270 is a fabulous caliber,low recoil,a great deer gun.heck of an all around caliber.;) ;)

owned a 270 yrs ago and the recoil was very mild. like ears said, there are other choises like the 7mm08 or even the 25-06 which do a real number on the whitetail population and have even a lil less recoil..but if you can handle the 270...then go for it... its a real dandy deerin' round.

The .270 is a fine deer rifle!! Recoil is nothing. All the above posts are certainly positive towards the .270. Let us know if you buy one and what make.

Well, it appears that I was worrying about nothing. If Dan,s 120 pound daughter can handle the 270's recoil then my 6'1" 210 pound frame should handle it just fine.;) I am hoping to acquire a new rifle at the big gun show in my town for the year, this weekend. I am interested in either an old Sako or a pre-64 Winchester Model 70. Dan and Skeet both mentioned having pre- 64 Model 70s. What do you guys think about the old Sakos and pre-64 Winchesters?

Thanks to all of you for your input. It was unanamous, so I will be looking for a 270 this weekend and hope to be bragging about acquiring one on this forum next week. ;)

I have a real liking for the pre 64 M-70. Had more than 75 at one time but have sold off all but about 6. The aforementioned FW supergrade and a 250-3000, 257 Roberts,7mm Mauser. 300 Savage and a first year 30-06 given to me by my father in law. I had another till not long ago but somebody really wanted to buy it so it is gone.
The older Sako is a nice rifle. I have an older Sako 75 in 30-06 that is a pretty rifle and it shoots quite well...well a lot better than I can shoot it. They'll both cost you about the same but the Winchester will appreciate in value over the years much more than the Sako. I can't believe how many Winchester rifles and shotguns are being sold for parts now days. You can usually get twice as much for the parts as you can for the complete gun. Model 12's and 97's especially,,,more parts in them. In fact i have an old 1903 A3 Springfield here that someone offered me 150 bucks for the bolt. Bent and swept Sniper Bolt apparently. Heck, I thought the whole barreled action was only worth about 150-200. Buy a Winchester...you'll probably love it

Great choice with the .270

Bill, I'm not tryin to flaunt em....as Skeet says, the pre 64 70 only appreciates! Besides ...IMO.....better workmanship then the SAKO....thats gonna start an argument.....stocks may go down but Winchester steel has not! I have a number of them...I just buy shooters...still 85%+ that way I can enjoy them more than just looking at em. Kinda nice to go to the range, open a couple of hard cases n watch people kinda drool...LOL

drop all thoughts of the 277 cals, these are very good calibers but arent the best deer round out there.

id only deer is on the menu then i think the 257 is the best of the best on just so happens to be stuffed in 270win case. its the 2506.

that being said im just jokeing, jokeing about dropping the 270 from thoughts but still throwing out the 2506 for you to see. ive got boht the 2506 and 270win. i head mention of the 2506 haveing alittle les recoil than the 270. in hear to say its alot less recoil. probly doesnt kick even half what the 270 does. at least mine doesnt. its more like compareing the 3006 to 243 in recoil. the 243 isnt anywhere near like the 3006 in felt recoil.

my 270win is not a rifle i care to shoot alot of holes in paper with. but it has been a rifle ive enjoued for 10 years now. the 270 and i have hunted varmits to elk and been succesfull.

out of all my rifles it brings the most to table. and has taken all my big game. even though ive tried to give my othere rifles a chance at provideing for the table..

you wont go wrong by getting 270. id sujest you stick with your gut enstincts and stick with the 270. youl thank me later.

the .270 is a much better choice over the 25/06 for deer imo.

yeah the old 270 realy is good cal for deer.
