Smoothbore No. 1 Mark III Enfield

The local gun shop has a .410 shotgun built on an Enfield No. 1 Mark III platform. While it is curious, there does not seem to be much buyer interest. The gun appears to have Indian markings and I suspect the original bore was ruined and then bored out to be a shotgun. Kind of reminds me of a few '98 Mausers I saw that were converted to 12 gauge bolt action shotguns. Anyone else encounter these reworks? All the best...

410 Enfield

These things have been around for years. never much interest in them in my neck of the woods but people keep buying them...mainly because they are 410's and cheap.

Some of the early ones where built like that, and issued to the native troops as forage guns, others over time have been put together with parts and rebored or bored out bbl's

Gil,

I read an article a while back about .410 bore Mk IIIs. It appears the Brits made up a limited number of them for use as prison guard guns.

Like the others mentioned, i have heard of them vaguely.

Seems liek it would make a pretty decent little 410 though, hell if price wasen't real high i wouldnt midn having one myself.

Actually the majority of 410 SMLE's were produced in India and issued to the police there as riot guns. Lithgow small arsm factory also made some conversions and sold them commercially after the wars. Being a SMLE fan myself I found a very handy site is http://enfields.freestarthost.com/ check it out!

We had a series of them for sale in Canada. That was the history for them.
