shot through a rifled barrel?

is it safe to use stuff like #5 shot al the way up to 00 buckshot in a rifled slug barrel?

fabsroman 08-12-2005 07:56 PM

Even if it is safe, I have heard that the patterns are terrible because the wads come out spinning and the shot is accelerated outward.

Sorry I don't know about the safety issue.

"as far as i know" the only "saftey" issue would be if your using an older shotgun, and new steel shot.

It is _possible_ for an older/low quality (IE really cheap import) softer steel barrel, and definately a damascus one, to get a piece of the newer steel shot stuck in the rifiling. this can leadup to other problams, or major problems if ones does so, and you run a slug throug it.

Probably no more than a split barrel, but you never know, and it might not even happen, but there have been instances in the past.

keep your smoothvore for shot, and rifiled for slugs, best, safest bet.

So technically yes you _could_ do it, but i wouldn't. nor would i stand in the same room when you did it.

Just my opinion.

Just Curious

I don't know your particular set-up but was wondering as to why you wouldn'y just use a saboted slug if you already had a rifled barrel. You would more than likely get much better accuracy.

well say i want a short barreled shotgun for primarily hunting deer with slugs but coyotes, foxes and turkeys may also be on the menu and i don't have the funds for another short, smooth bore barrel?

M70, you need a smooth bore that has removable chokes, and get a rifled choke tube for slugs.

shot in a rifled bbl

It will shoot ok...but as stated previously the patterns will suck. Remington makes a slug bbl for the 870 and 11-87 that has choke tubes for turkey or other sized shot and a rifled choke that seems to shoot ok. Had one that would shoot 4 in groups at a 100 with the rifled choke...with sabot type slugs. Those slug guns really do kick...sighting them in!!
